Just finished installing my bbm and piping about a week ago, but have had a few dramas since doing it. While it had the mpefi manifold on it was fine, put the bbm on and it lost power above 3krpm, would rev but not go anywhere, ended up being the distributor had about 3mm of play left to right up and down, replaced that did the timing and it makes power all the way up to 5k, now during this process the timing has been really hard to do, it doesnt want to stop pinging, even now it will still ping at high rpm on a hot day, ive replaced: distributor, plugs, fuel filter, map sensor, air intake temp sensor, tps, injectors. Could the o2 sensor cause the pinging? or should i just throw the old manifold back on, cause it never pinged while that was on, but the bbm does make more seat of your pants power. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. anyway on for the pics. sorry about the quality where taken on my phone

what ecu are u using?

When i had this conversion done i had the same problem. I had the standard eb xr6 ecu, together with a EMS unit. The standard ecu ended up being removed cause it apparently was causing the problems.

Once removed and tuned again , the problem was solved...now its a pig to start on cold days!

1st gear is just like foreplay, it's ok, but you want it to go as fast as you can and get it out of the way so you can get into the real sh*t!

the problem is your not running the EL ECU, unless you go aftermarket or keep it switched to the short runners or put an EL ECU in your going to have this problem.

I ended up not doing the BBM conversion because I dont have smartlock and the bypass was to expensive. But if you have smartlock it wont be a problem

yea i dont have smartlock either (s1 eb), ive been fiddling with timing and so far so good its switched on high runners and not pinging even at temp so ill see how it goes, and its still making power the whole way through, it feels quicker than the older manifold but i have no way to measure if it is or not, just out of wonder, on high runners does the ecu not have the correct fuel maps to suit more air being pulled in or is it something totally different?

EL's and EF's run different timing and fuel maps depending on where the runners are, to get the most out of your conversion buy a smartlock overide from 66 coupe and an EL computer. This will also allow you to run thermo fans later on as well

i already have thermos, but they are permanently on at ignition on position, how much do the overrides cost? im guessing i could pickup a el ecu quite cheaply from the wreckers?

EL ECU's are cheap on ebay, I have seen cop EL ECU's got for $80 or regular ones for $35. The overides are $150 from 66 coupe or $350 from JMM. with the EL ecu the thermos will run properly
