Hi guys, am new on here. Have a question for you..my 4.0 xg panelvan has developed a bad bearing or drivebelt noise in front of engine, it's sounds like they do on fast idle, but it's all the time. Seems to be directly at front of engine..could it be waterpump? Or maybe just a belt? Thanks for your help, Cheers, Ron

so XG is similiar to an EB with the 3 belts? remove the belts and spin everything by hand. the noisy pulley/bearing will be narrowed down. then replace as neccessary

definitely knock the belt off and give everything a turn. sometimes you can ( gently ! ) pick the seal out of the pulleys and spray or push some grease into them. then gently push the seal back in. quite often the make bit of noise because they're dry.

Or if you don't want to pull everything out, get a stethoscope to find where the noise is coming from (a good home stethoscope is to grab a long screwdriver, or breaker bar/long piece of metal and put one end to the noise area, and the other end to your ear, you'll be able to hear if it's a bearing or what not... Just dont put the screwdriver or metal into the drive belt...)

Yeah the boys are right pull the belts off and spin the idlers ( the two pulleys that tension the P/S belt and A/C belt tight). These are, from my experience in the workshop, are the two most common bearings that will fail. After that the next likely thing as you said will be the water pump. Powersteering pump usually doesn't give much trouble but its worth checking why the belt is off. Hope this helps
