The real drama with changing coolants is not flushing them out and mixing them. I used to just top up with prestons yellow antifreeze, safe to mix with all coolants. Now I just do full flushes and top ups with nulon & royal purple. Can't find the prestons concentrate anywhere anymore.
The key to this story for an everyday car is finding one thats compatible with alloy, that's about it. And in reply to phongus, I've run water to with no problems, the only time you really need antifreeze, is when it's cold & risk pre-start freezing. If your boiling coolant under normal conditions then something is wrong. Anti boil just gives you a bit more of a safety margin but the glycol also retards the coolants ability to disperse heat so it's a false safety.

Just undo the bottom radiator hose. Sometimes taking the drain plug out can cause problems because you disturb the seal and it will keep dripping.

They are normal hose clamps with little metal covers on them covering the screw. Get the pliers around them and pull them of sideways.

Okay did it all but I think the hose leaks now its fine on idle but I backed it out the drive way and just as it slopes there was a wet patch there as I was coming back in

It could be old coolant still drying. Check it again after it all dries. It may need to be nipped up a little.
But dont go too tight or you could crack the radiator tank.

You guys are all gonna bag the crap out of me, but I"ve been running nothing but WATER in my cars for years. As long as you change it OFTEN, and keep the level good, I've never had an issue, I've always generally had a minor water leak though, I think when I seal all my water leaks, I'll run coolant, but with plenty of changes and flushes, I've had no issues running WATER.
Cheers, Gab |
