Yeh i believe once they hit about 3700 rpm the pacemaker 4499 will start to win but for me i want something thats good under 2500rpm as thats were most of my driving is done and id only extractors and exhaust to get better fuel economy, plus they flow better than factory so its a win plus if u dyno both extractors on same car i dont see the pacemaker 4499 making a heap more power and torque.

tickford_6 wrote: the old pacie comps and the JMM are the only two i know off. you'd have to buy second hand to get the pacemaker for what you want. and before some one trys to tell me that pacie comps are for high rpm only, you're an idiot! thats not directed at you mickyyyy That together with with previous part about 38mm diameter with longest primaries = good answer. In the end, the difference between any of the off the shelf mandrel bent systems isn't much; I would choose whatever I could find cheap second hand.

Im with u on that 1 and i also dont see much between them all especially on a standard engine but with work like high comp pistons. head porting and cam then its starts to get into a better extractor like pacemaker.

Definately. Sorry made the assumption it was for a fairly mild engine (being for low down power).

Thats ok, all this is based on stock or mild engine with baby cam
I guess if u had a engine with 10.2 comp and a stage 1 or 2 cam maybe a 41mm primary will be ok becuz of the comp???

Yeah; if I was going with that much compression it would be because I wanted it for a big cam which would be for gains in the top end and would want wider primaries (talking off the shelf systems here).
I only just realised this this thread was the one from a while ago; there was some good info in here, should use some of it and make a sticky (although we need more info posted on pulse tuning; delegates and waits for tickford_6 ).

With valves opening and closing exhaust flow isn't constant, it pulses. When the exhaust valve closes there will be a vacuum behind the pulse (due to it inertia and relatively high velocity); obviously this aids in sucking the next pulse of exhaust gas out. The easiest way to think of pulse tuning is getting the pipes to line up such that they aid one another in sucking out expelled gas. Although on top of this there are harmonics to do with exhaust waves etc.
It is a very indepth scientific area. When I was studying engineering I happened to stumble across this book when trawling the uni library to see if there was anything useful. It isn't new, and there are probably new theories/ideas to do with exhaust tuning, but I thought this was an awesome resource; just be prepared to reread it. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/automotive-engineering/Scientific-Design-Exhaust-and-Intake-Systems.html

Haha, the vast majority of exhaust places have very little idea in the way of performance design, as in the end 99% of their work is fitting off the shelf items or making simple changes/repairs.
In the end, in any high performance (professional race) application an engineer (meaning qualified professional engineer ie $$$) will be the one designing, whether it be exhaust, intake, engine or transmission components, leaving it to the mechanics/fabricators etc to make/build it (who would be of the caliber that have a good enough conceptual grasp of the science behind, such as to employ methods of construction relevant to meeting the design requirements). Obviously when normal people are hunting for a custom exhaust they hit up a specialised place, who usually design based on their general scientific knowledge of design and experience.

Just get yourself a set of wildcat 21x. excellent pulling power down low from 1700 to 3500 with out the annoying kick downs(auto) plus your engine won't screaming its head off. the 4.0L sprint cars use them on the tracks and I find them quite reliable and has a lower profile. it doesn't take up space in the engine bay. they're cheap and well suited for every day usage.
if you wish, you can pull apart the secondary collector and flare it for the pipe over cone design... sshhh!
