I agree with service kit...if you haven't cleaned it for a long time and it's sort of black, you might need to use half of the cleaning bottle to get everything off...remember the filter started of WHITE and the oil that is sprayed on is red. phong =P~

Get service kit.
- Apply the cleaning spray liberally - Wash it with hose pressure water from the 'clean' side out (i.e. you want to push the dirt out, the though the filter). Wash it until it's white. - Let dry, outside sunny day. A dryer or whatever will perish the rubber and ruin it. - apply filter oil, enough to get it pink/red again, but you don't want it dripping wet with oil. done.

seems to be working fine so far and its a cheap way to do it 18. Can I use anything other than K&N cleaner and oil? For best results, we recommend that you use K&N air filter recharging oil and K&N air filter cleaner. K&N air filter oil is a special compound which forms a very efficient tacking agent that helps capture dust. Our cleaner is a non-detergent degreaser. Petroleum products such as transmission fluid and motor oil will soften and destroy the rubber sealing edges. Harsh solvents and gasoline will harden the rubber seals causing the filter to distort (shrink). A mild detergent can be used in a pinch, but care should be taken to fully rinse it out. Rinsing detergent out of a filter is similar to getting soap out of a sponge; it’s not that easy to do. Always make sure the filter is dry before re-oiling. In the words of Gordon Ramsay "f**k Me!!!"

So the petrol cleaning and engine oil oiling, should cause no harm at all to the rubber?
LOL. And that $20 cleaning kit has lasted me two cars, three filters, and over 6 years and it's still going strong. Not exactly expensive maintenance.
