Hi,
Just wondering how much damage is done to a car if the rev limiter is reached? I have a 6 speed manual BF XR6 and have on the odd occasion let it slip past the usable revs and hit the limiter. I have backed off straight away, but i am hoping that it is a safety measure to stop damage. I am no sure how the system works or if I could potentially blow my Cat to pieces etc.

hey mate, the rev limiter is there to prevent you doing damage..
With the valve springs that are in the ba's you are likely to get valve bounce as you start climbing over 6000rpm The rev limiter cuts spark (im pretty sure, maybe its fuel?) so it feels like its really harsh as the car all of a sudden loses power, but thats just the system doing its job. It wont damage your cat if you were to over rev it, but you could potentially do alot more damage reving to 7000rpm with the stock setup, bending valves can cause a chain reaction of damage. In short, you've got nothing to worry about

if you hit the limiter occasionally... when shifting.. should be allright... just dont stay on the limiter!..

In the BA+ cars, the (first) rev limiter actually backs off - closes - the throttle (being electronically controlled).
If that should fail the hard cut kicks in which is a spark cut.

The standard tune hard cuts it.
Should be fine.... oil pumps like to fail at 7krpm.. should be fine with 6k.. Mines taken a fair amount of punishment even at 6k and it still runs awesome, I have mine modded for high rpm power. |

Change gear, easy fix.
After peak power there is a sharp drop in output and your wasting time. I have a BF T6 and shift by 5500. Stops making power so why not shift gears and make it pull again. As for damage, could let a rod go, piston, valve ... wait and see. |

I don't let it hit the limiter everytime i drive. I was really just asking if the couple of times it has hit the limiter would have done any damage. I agree about changing gears earlier as there is not much more puff left above 5500 rpm.
Thanks for all your advice guys its good to know that its not all that bad if i accidentally make a slip.

The rev limiters are set a LONG way below any point of damage. This is witnessed by how many people raise the rev limiters successfully and never have trouble.

no problem in the au xr6. i was hitting the limiter for a good 30 seconds, 2, 3 times a day for a couple months. had to sell the car due to unpaid fines.

the car loves staying on the limiter. when i had the au xr6 vct i was on the limiter for 30 seconds maybe 2 3 times a day for 2 months. i dont know about the ba-bf but.
