2007 MkII BF Fairmont Ghia 6 cylinder

Today I went to start up my car and nothing, all the lights come on but the engine would not turn over all I got was a click.

First I thought it may be a flat battery but I checked it and it's fine, the battery is only 12 months old.

I tried to start it in the neutral position and still nothing, back into park the same.

Pulled out the starter fuse and checked it with a multimeter and it is fine.

Tried to start the car again and she started no prob's, turn off the engine tried it a few more times and it's OK starts great.

I went for drive to the shop, stop the engine and tried to start the engine and the same thing happens again it wont turn over.

I jiggled the starter relay under the bonnet a few times and it started.

I replaced the starter rely with a new one but I still have the same problem.

The problem to me seems to be a electrical fault somewhere and it's intermittent.

has anyone come across this type of problem before?

battery terminals at a guess. had this problem before, drove me absolutely insane.

the starter motor solenoid can bugger up causing this, its on the starter motor it can jam up and wont turn the motor over, next time it does it give the starter motor a bash with a hammer or something and it will probably start

I doubt it's old enough to have that problem bry but it's deffinately worth a try. The reason behind this is it's usually the brushes carbon up after alot of use and need a good tap to clear it out. electric motor full of carbon = short = no worky worky.

I've had battery terminals provide enough juice to turn reds but not starter motor. Enough to send you loopy till you figure it out!

I have replaced the relay but sames problem, I'll have to check out the starter motor and all the conections I think?

had he same problem on the wifes ba check the 2 connectors behind the passengers headlight under the airbox disconnect them and spay some wd40 in them and reconnect

What do the connections behind the passenger headlight have to do with the starter motor? As I am having the same problem as stated at the start of this post!

A bit more research has found that the solinoid on the starter motor gets hot when you try to crank the car and hold the key in the cranking position, which to me suggests there is power getting to the starter but it just isn't cranking the electric motor, any other suggestions would be great!
