rushed wrote: bigger t/bodies used to be one of those frowned upon mods (while everyone one else was doing it, alot of ford people said they were a waste of time), but as some people are actually doing it now its becoming more accepted, i have ordered one off fast xr (see for sale section) as i have a fair bit of motor work done, as have 12 other people, im sure there will be some reviews out soon.
p.s. on a stock motor i wouldnt belive ebays claim of "bolt on 15kw", i would only consider it after better intake/exhaust/cam/headwork p.p.s the plate is the "butterfly" from mem (ive had a few ) It was only frowned upon by those ignorant. The reason its generally not worth upgrading is that a) people's intake systems (even a lot of those modified) still presents a greater level of restriction then what the t/b does. b) the majority of users don't run cams bigger than a 1636/are more interested in low-midrange torque than mid and upwards. Now I know that "fastxr didn't lose any downlow", but remember he is running a cms st3 cam (which I'm fairly sure would have a higher lift and longer duration than a 1636) and st2 heads, so even at low rpm his engine still sucks more air then the majority of users here. In saying that oversizing t/b generally doesn't pose as great a problem as undersizing as you will either stop noticing power gains (once it exceeds the amount your heads can flow/cam allows) or you have issues with throttle control downlow anyway.

Grimketel - It is a straight swap but i did open up the ID of the gasket to suit.
Doofus - 130rwkw at 160kms approx. 4700rpm & 370Nm at 106kms approx. 3100rpm on a Mainline Dynolog Dyno , before the bigger throttle body. I felt the engine had more mid rang pull can't tell you about top end because it gets there to fast. I will dyno the car again on the same dyno not to proof anyone wrong but for myself. It my or mynot make more power but i felt the differance & i know my car like you would know yours. It can't be a bad thing anyway. I have spent over $500 in experimenting on blot on power & have tossed them in the bin for one example is the ebay fan forced inlet that i paid over $300. That was rubbish. I felt no differance in power any where in the rev range. I spent $250 for the bigger throttle body & i noticed a differance. I say STOP bagging things & just try it for your self because not everything works in theory but trial & eara is the way to go because some things my work for you but not work for others.

please don't tell me you read posts on here telling you not to buy a fan forced inlet but then went and did?

NO way before i was a fordmods member. But like i said before trial & eara is the way to go. It mite cost you a bit. Trust me i know.
FAST-XR is making the throttle bodies for cheaper than a bought mine & FIEND is also making somthing differant that mite work for you so i say give them a go & let us know. If we can make our FORDS go faster, there's nothing wrong with that.

I like the trial and error thing myself. However being a broke a** kiwi I prefer more trial and less error. In fact, I've been damn lucky so far. Everything I've done seems to have worked (which explains the pages and pages and pages of talking to myself as I work through it all from every angle before actually taking the angle grinder to anything...!)
The biggest disappointment I have to say is the holes in the bonnet for cooling purposes. It's not that they don't work, but they don't make as much difference as what I hoped. Sure - parked in traffic around town they're great, but anything above 70km/h for long periods actually makes very little difference to the heat in engine bay components. Damn, what topic was this? Oh, that's right... Keeping air intake and manifolds cool is in no way related to the throttle body... Or is it http://www.fordmods.com/forums/post942409.html#942409 http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... 08&start=0 Last edited by fiend on Thu Jan 22, 2009 1:43 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

I'm planning on looking into this more when I have the Supercharged engine in my EL... I think I'd really see some benefit from it.

how big is your intake piping? For boosted applications you don't wanna really oversize your t/b, at most only a few mm bigger to account for cross sectional area taken up by the butterfly at wot.

The intake piping is all 2.5 inches to keep velocity up... I figured that ones the intake reached the throttle body, better flow would be more important than velocity... Figured it was worth a try anyway.
