Ok
My mum has a 99 AU series 1 falcon, other than the 17 inch rims, it is bog stock but regularly serviced. It is lowish km (155k). lately, it has been giving poor economy (poorer than usual), and from take off it has been a bit smokey when giving it the berries. Now it has been serviced by ford 2 weeks ago, so I assume it isnt that simple of a problem. It also has had a rough idle every now and then while sitting on the brake (so my old girl tells me). Just wondering what it could be?

righto, i'll check the rubber hose going back.
I assume there is an O2 sensor going into the exhaust? also the Map sensor? what am i looking for when checking these out? I've never owned a ford 6 before and it drives pretty smooth. Rings are fine, did a comp test a few weeks ago and compression is within 6 percent of each other. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah, there's an O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold.
The MAP sensor is on the firewall and has an electrical connector and a rubber hose going to the inlet manifold. It sounds like the MAP sensor and putting that rubber hose back on will most likely fix the problem. A bad O2 sensor will usually cause bad economy but nowhere near as bad as a bad MAP sensor. Also, a problem with the MAP sensor will also cause the engine to miss and maybe even stall. Hope that helps.

where abouts is the map sensor located and where abouts does the vac line lead to?
What does the map sensor look like? Never owned a 6 before (normally 8 cylinders or nothing!).

on firewall on passenger side, black ob about size of cigarette case, with a tube going from it to the middle of the intake manifold, and a wire connector on the bottom.
if this is done it will piss black smoke out and idle REALLY badly, has fallen off a few times on my car. |

au map sensor is within the manifold, so dont bother looking for it on the firewall you wont find it.
coolant temp sensor could also cause that problem, its one of those things you need to diagnose / isolate one thing at a time... |

dude i had the exact same problem n got the same car, pumping black smoke, well still does on petrol, to fix it i have to get a new fuel rail and fuel pump regulator or some s**t, gonna cost me like 600, but already spent a grand on fixin the gas
so maybe that gives u another idea on wat the problem could b |

Where does the temperature gauge sit when running normally? I had a similar problem and found that the thermostat was rs causing it to run rich.
