Trying to get idea of extent of repairs to be done on this car. White smoke from engine, loss of power, water leak from head, oil hasnt mixed with oil. We bought this car as everything else works on it and it starts but then dies when going to idle. Seller reckons it may just be a head gasket but if it is we will fix it even if it is the head - we want to have it fixed as we like the car. Anyone knows of cost of this type of job or can i get used or aftermarket gasket and or head ? and give it to mechanic? any ideas of costs or what i should do or how long it takes for this type of problem to be fixed by the shop? thanks

blown head gasket could also be warped of softened head from over heating, so can either find a reco head or just replace whole engine, but very much depends on the damage to the head and gear. if i was u id source another motor and swap them over,

Well white smoke normally means a cracked gasket/head, so at this stage from what you've told us it appears the headgasket is the only problem.
If you can do it yourself, expect a bill of around 200, 80 for an AU MLS gasket, 40 odd for head bolts, 80 odd to get the head decked and crack tested (roughly).

Most likely just the head gasket is gone, costly to get done as its a fair amount of labour but if you can do it yourself then the major costs are only a MLS(AU) head gasket, new head bolts and possibly a head skim. There is a technical document here that covers the work and plenty of trhreads covering every aspect of it many times over.

Thanks guys. I wont be able to do it Im no novice with cars but if the head itself is cracked can I just get in touch with some Ford Parts shop and get a used one? Or even a block ? Anyone knows how much these might be? And for the head gasket and bolts are these the only things I should be ordering and from any of those Ford / Holden parts places I see around - Im in West Sydney thanks

Head bolts from any parts store but if you want to go the MLS way you will have to visit ford spares as they are the only source for them.

Ok..... well there are guides on here and the internet on how to do the headgasket replacement, its fairly straight forward.
You wont get a new head/block from Ford, and I'm not sure as to why you would want to.
Head gasket is available from Ford, failing that any reputable spare parts store.
Head bolts the same, any reputable spare parts store should be able to help you out.
When you pull the head off take it to a workshop, they'll tell you if its f**k or not.
Theres a 90% chance it'll need to be decked regardless, and if its f**k, they'll either offer to reco it ($250+) or reco it on an exchange basis.
Only reason you would consider and engine transplant is if you had blowby or big end bearing noise (other than a worked motor), otherwise you'll have to do the head on the other motor while its out or risk the new motor doing the headgasket after you've installed it.

Very helpful Im beginning to calm down as my wife isnt impressed that I picked up something that hasnt moved since the tow truck brought it. I was only able to reverse up driveway and the noise and smoke were too much well the centre muffler is gone too but the engine itself with the blown head is loud and engine only stays alive with my foot pushing pedal but dead when it drops to idle. But Im hopeful as I like this car I like the Fairmont ghia than my old futura. So I guess Im calling around ford parts places for 1) head gasket 2) head bolts - then I get them and after I call around for repair quotes I then take them with me to the shop - from what I have learned so far from this post

Shame you're in New Zealand, I have a Pro-Torque valve regrind set to suit EF EL to 11/97. I paid AU$140 including head bolts but now I don't need them. You can have them for AU$70 plus whatever post costs if you want them. If you don't take them, I will put them in the for sale forums for $95 + post.

Im actually in West Sydney - moved here in April which is why I left behind my loyal EL Futura in NZ. Im going to have to be on the phone to the shops and garages as soon as they come back from holidays. I just want to get some idea of costs and what parts required. Is that the part I need to sort out this blown head commotion?
