I assume by cam gear, you mean the sprocket? I can only think this is what has happened, its moved further down the chain in the bottom, didnt think there was that much slack, and i have read that this shouldnt happen as there is a guide underneath that prevents this... The sprocket and cam do locate with one dowell, so it can only go on one way... SO I will be ok to just set crank to TDC, remove the sprocket, line it up properly, then put the sprocket back on? s**t ill need to unbolt the rockers again, bugger...oh well, thats all I can think of too.... |

sounds weird i would be inclined not to touch it as the cam sprocket or crank should not have moved, how far is it out, are you sure ure reading it correctly

Im not too sure now, I finish work at 11 tonight, Ill go home and have a look, see what the hell is going on...maybe i was on drugs at the time...lol...will report back what I find tonight!

Close.. actually the other way around, 1 revolution of the cam for every two of the crank

OK...I am in deep s**t...
When the crank is at TDC mark, the mark on the cam sprocket is WAY off...I have NFI what has happened!!! Im guessing I could just set the crank at TDC, remove the rocker assembly and cam, then remove the sprocket and line it back up with the mark then put it all back together. The only problem I see is that this could only have been caused by slack in the chain in the bottom has jumped teeth, and so will the other sprockets under the timing cover still be lined up corectly??? I DO NOT want to remove the timing chanin cover if I can help it... f**k f**k...I have NO IDEa what has happened??? HELP! |

I had the chain cable tied to the sprocket the whole time, so the chain hasnt moved in relation to the sprocket.
Heres an interesting photo, after I removed the head. You can see the sprocket in the same position it is now...so I MUSTN'T have had it set at TDC when I removed everything...which is really bothering me as I remember doing it as one of the first things as the gregories said... |

sprocket to chain position doesn't matter, it's only the 2 spocket marks that matter. the crank on tdc and the cam on its mark. the big problem is that being an interferance engine you may need to remove the head again to turn the cam to the right position. |

To allow the cam to move, I just need to pull the rocker assembly, thats easy enough...so should I be able to just realign the sprocket by removing it? As far as I can see, that should be ok?

The only thing is that for it to be off that much, it would have to have slipped a shoitload of teeth which seems unlikely, I am going crazy here, what do I do? LOL!?

yeh forgot about that sproket, it drives the oil pump and dizzy if you have one, but like i said i think these engines are an interferance engine, meaning that the pistons and valves will iterfere each other if cam timing is way out, if this is the case, depending on how far out you are you could be in trouble

ah ok yea, I see what you mean...yea if its way out I couyld bugger it, hence I want to get it right before I go any further...
I think the best bet is to remove the rocker gear, remove the cam, undo sprocket bolt, remove sprocket and line it back up to its mark, the put it all back together and turn it over by hand, and just watch the valve springs...I guess if one is going to hit a piston, I shouldd see the spring move as it hits the piston...? |

yeh but if when you turn the cam it feels like it is stuck, and wont turn, don't force it, that will be a valve on a piston, therfore explaining why i say you may need to remove the head again. fingers crossed you don't need too.
