dont spose theres a non factory cam you dont know about in there and the last person spun the sprocket around a bit?

if you know the crank and aux sprocket are in the correct line could you just spin the cam sprocket to the right spot, meaning all the timing marks line up and re attach the cam?

then again i know f**k all about engines ;)

assuming the chain cant slip a tooth on the bottom cogs? and you can see down in there that the timing marks are lined up?

SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking at the wrong fecking mark!!! The timing mark on the sprocket is a ittle dot on the outside of the sprocket......

WHats even worse is that I had initially set the timing to THIS MARK only a few days ago!!! I need to give up the crack LMFAO!!!!

SO I just wnet out and checked and the mark is spot on, as it was all along!!!

Thanks for all the help and replies!

havnt ever had the head off a car, any change of taking a photo with a digi cam real close to the timing case in the gap at the top then zooming in to get a rough idea if they are level

Sorry... Has a good laugh when I read that, but then think back and realise its another bloody Ford speciality.

The cam gear is different on the EL hybrids than everything prior. This same sprocket is used for oil pump idler sprocket. That little dowl is used for the camshaft timing sensor, and the extra marks are used to correctly align it. But in the case of a camshaft, as you found, it does meant squat.

Good luck getting the rest of the thing together.

As mentioned Dave, I doubt the Aux shaft alignment is an issue with EL's - just pull your dizzy cap and make sure the rotor is at the right position when the crank is at TDC(#1&6 piston on the rise), if not, pull the dizzy and realign it . . . :P Later when the engine is running, you can fine tune the timing.

Yep, got her all bolted back up and it started first go, running sweet as....temps normal etc...

Will keep an eye of fluid level and check for leaks around head...but all seems fine just now!

Thanks for all the help!

Oh ... do I need to retension the head bolts after a set amount of time or will they be fine as they are?

Fine as they are. They are a once only tension set of bolts.

The only issue I can see with that is, if it was way out you could end up with the TFI against the block, where there isn't room.

The only thing is that for it to be off that much, it would have to have slipped a shoitload of teeth which seems unlikely, I am going crazy here, what do I do? LOL!?

Its not possible for the chain to drop off the crankshaft sprocket, as there is a chain guide there which prevents it from falling far enough to clear the sprocket teeth.

Glad to see you got it all worked out in the end. Its very easy to make a mistake like that, a lot harder to admit it.

Yea, LOL....rather humerous to say the least!!!! :D

After all that, it turned out to be really quite an easy job....NOT worth paying mechanic $$$ to do it!!

Im driving to wollongong tonight (45 minutes drive) and back, so that will be a decent test to see if it all hold up ok!

This is a hybrid EL right? There was a change to the cam gear on these engines. I am not 100% sure what it was. I was working in a dealership when they released these and there was some info about these 98 engines and the changes made. I wish I could find it!!
On your pic, the cam locating pin seems to be in the the position the timing mark on the gear should be. Can someone else verify if the timing marks and cam pin are in the same spot on earlier engines?

Yea its a May 98 Hybrid...

The cam timing mark is a LITTLE dot on the outer edge of the sprocket...the pin is around 90 degrees away from the mark...
