Ok, I think it has happened, the head gasket is leaking....
Coolant is all down the driver side of the block, goes up as far as the head...seems to be coming from there, so I just needed someone to confirm.... Is it reltively easy to do it myself? I did one a few years ago on my old Renault 19..lol... how long roughly to do it? cost to buy new headgasket?

It definately looks like a blown head gasket to me.
You should be able to do it yourself aslong as you have correct tools and as long as the head isnt damaged and you have the parts and preferably a friend to help it could be done in a day or 2. Remember when you take out the head bolts its a good idea to change them as the have a tendancy to stretch.

Yea, I got amate coming round soon, we'll give it a bash...read the gregories, doesnt look to difficult..never removed the chain or anything before but seems fairly straight forward...only thing is I dont have a torque wrench...might just have to buy an el cheapo from supercheap 
New head bolts...ok will do! any other hints/tricks are most welcome! |

definately a leakin gasket quite bad to, u will need a torque wrench, and you will need to have the head taken to be plaines as well so its flat, clean the block witha wire brush attached to a drill, and dont forget to reset the timing chain tensioner

POssibly just cable tie the chain to the cam gear... that way you dont have to figure out if you put it back correctly

Thanks for the help....do I NEED to have the head plained? Or can I get away with it if it is completely flat?
I doubt I can get it done anywhere tomorrow, and I need the car ASAP... |

it wouldbe hard to tell from sight if the head is completly flat. also if there is some corrosion near the water jackets these will need to be fixed or else your goign to be taking it off again next week

hmm....
having done a search, it seems poeple suggest the AU head gasket...why is this? Because its metal? will it fit my EL XR6 Hybrid engine? Are there any other gaskets I will need to replce when removing the head? Thanks! |

Get it refaced and the valves atleast vaccuum checked for peace of mind. As was said, you don't wanna be pulling it back off again for the sake of it being off the road for an extra day.

do the job properlly
take head off and get it serviced if possible . saves a head ache in a fewm onths when starts to leek again . mine has been like that for over 4 1/2 years now i just had put up with it till i get another motor

I agree with MRE-04L. Get it serviced.
My old mans falcon done the same thing, and it turns out that the head had 3 cracks in it to. Lukily he had the head serviced and now the car is going as strong as ever.

Yeah Dave, as mentioned, may as well do the head properly while it's off - gasket face machined, crack checked, valves refaced. You could always get a rough quote from Everlast at Flinder's industrial.

Yea, Ive decided thats what I'll do...better to do the job properly...theres a mob here in town local, I'll check them out, or those others at Flinders you mentioned Ray...
Ive almost got the head off, just got the plenum chamber, fuel rail and intake manifold left, then the head will be off... The bastard plenum chamber has stupid pain in the a*** hex bolts that need an allan key to get them off, and silly me doesnt have one of those sockets with the allan key on thend...guess what Im buying tomorrow!

Oh and what is the go with head gaskets....should I really go for an AU one? Will I need any other gaskets? I can't think of any...? Intake manifold, will that definately need replaced or only if its s**t?
