My guess is the starter is had it, the blue arcs or flashes could be the brushes are worn down and now have no or little contact.

The Clampy post contradicts that. It is unclear (at least to me) if it is turning over or not.

it was turning over, but not anymore! but just to muddy the watters, it was turning over after the spark, then a day later decided it wouldn't.

motor turns over anti-clockwise, but not very well clockwise

This would concern me. Does anyone know how well these motors like going backwards?

i had a similar problem a month ago. engine start one day nothing the next. turned out to be the smartlock control box behind the dash panel near the drivers left knee. turn the key as if to start and give the panel a little wack starts every time for me know. :?

id guess it should be easier to pull mtor backwards coz for the cylinders on compression stroke instead of compressing the chamber you're creating a vacuum which with the right amount of torque(enough, since ur using a long bar) it should pull just very slightly on the valves to creat enough gap to let a bit of air thru to drop the pressure and allow u to keep going..
