the local auto shops seem to push the brand they stock. what do you guys reckon BMC filter or K&N?? Has any dyno tests been done by any car mags?

does it really matter? after all its only an air filter, besides if there was a difference in gained KW (if any) i doubt you would notice it.

personal preference is for the K&N

As far as i know all a hi-flow filter does is increase the throttle response, and mabe might make a differnce in fuel economy..... might.... As for kw gains im pretty sure there aint much in this.
But yeah K&N is prolly my favourite choice atm

on our last dyno day in syd we had a comparison between the K&N filter and the BMC i think it was.
the K&N was the better performer i think but dont quote me on this i just remember having a car do 2 runs with different filters in it

They are both good performers for what they are intended for..
Get the one which offers best value for money; ie: the one you can grav for the less amount of money! Personally id go BMC, only coz ive had a few friends or family and mechs say they are better, but i bet if they were it wouldnt be noticable, or anywhere near it so hey - whichever!

i run a k&n but im going a bmc as it is a finer filter and smaller walls and with the ba xr8/gt ones it also has an addiontal opening at the top of the filter

Before most (not all so don't jump on me) recomend parts to some one you should know what you are talking about. Filters can indeed increase KW, not heaps but any increase is good. I have researched filters from both compaines and would have to go with the BMC Carbon Dynamic Airbox. For example on two european cars they tested 1 BMW M3 3000 had an output of 192KW and 261.1HP before and 205.5KW and 279.4 HP After. An Audi RS4 was 230KW and 312.8HP and went to 238KW and 323.6HP. Also the XR Club of Geelong tested the CDA 85-150 on a BA XR6T and recorded a 9KW increase. From what I have seen K&N only get about 4KW increase. BMC is also used by, Ferrai, BMW Williams, Toyota and Sauber in F1. Larry Perkins, DJR, Jim Richards and peter Fitzgerald also use them as does the entire Australian Carrera Cup Cars. I'm happy with there filters and the CDA and that is what I would recomend, if you are still unsure reseasrch it more and more, thats what I did

Have read a few reviews which suggests BMC is a higher-flowing filter as it has fewer layers of filtration whereas the K&N offers near-stock performance as it provides same filtration as a paper filter.
Note this is not personal experience, i got a K&N pod living in the inner guard.

I'd go the BMC.
I'd suggest you guys read this: http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm K&N, pretty much did a top job of coming last in every test. But I suppose there isn't much difference between every filter out there.

hmmm Interesting
I guess no air filter manufacturer has the magic formula What do you want flow or filtration? Can't have both. I have a question. Is there a size/surface area difference between a stock i6 filter and a stock V8 filter?

Mate thats in a turbo car panel filters/pod filters make quiet a large difference inb turbo cars not n/a cars. I have a redline filter and it does me fine i really dont think just cause another falcon has a k&n or bmc filter its gonna kick my a**. They are all made of the same crap with slight differences. |

So if the v8 and i6 filters and boxes are the same, the engineers at Ford
obviously decided that the stock filter was good enough to handle the increased flow of the 8. thus the stock filter/box should be good enough for an i6 putting out the same power or at least flowing the same as a stock 8 (whatever that is) or am I talking out my a***? I guess the question is how much dirt and crap do you want in your engine or how much do you want to shorten the engine life span for a couple of kW. Top fuel dragsters dont run filters of course they only last 5 seconds (a bit of an extreme example I know).

Note this is not personal experience, i got a K&N pod living in the inner guard. these numbers are from a book writen by david vizard. a 350 holly set up on a flow bech was tested for air flow. it was then fitted with a 8" by 2" round paper filter. that was then tested and porved to flow only 92.2% of the unfiltered carb. it was then fitted with a K&N filter of the same size. when tested there was no measurable loss in flow over the unfiltered carb. it was also found that after 5000 miles of use the K&N filter only lost 0.2% of it flow. the paper one lost 5% for the same distance traveled tell me how that is near stock performence so the BMC has a claim to fame of having less filtering layers. so doesn't that mean it also has less filtering ability. letting more dirt and dust into your engine |
