My 96 EL ABS wagon has the standard brake shudder at 100kph, now it's surging as I came down thru say 20 kph till it stops.
It's not thru the pedal, but you can feel the car do the surging. I've been waiting till the the pads are worn out (nearly there) then I'm putting in new slotted discs and pads and braided lines. Do the members think that it's just old pads and worn thin discs, even though I've not skimmed them and they have no groves. Hoping it's not the ABS, (no ABS light). |

1st check the wheel bearings, usually the LHS comes a little loose.
Also make sure the slide bolt in the caliper hasn't seized, This happened to mine and gave me shudder!

You can pull the ALB fusible link in the engine bay to prove ABS is/is not contributing to the condition - remember the 'Check ABS' caption will stay on.
I doubt it is at fault - but worth a check.

sounds like a warped disc, when you put on your new pads make sure you put in NEW teflon coated 'shims' (which I found are only available from FORD- correct me if I am wroung)

yeah my discs are warped really bad, from about 90clicks+ any more than light/ moderate braking and the whole car would shudder.
the slotted rotors your putting on should fix the prob.

Worn struts/shocks, wheels slightly out of balance, wheel bearings loose/worn and out of round tyre are some of the causes of brake shudder. After all that check rotors and so on.

What are "Teflon Shims" you talk about fitting and what do they do?

Remove rotors machine disc's if not undersize, replace if under front and rear.Clean and repack also adjust wheel bearings. Then bed in brakes properly to avoid any future noisey or shuddery brakes. Also forthe first 300kms once new brakes fitted avoid hard braking.Hope that helps.

'Teflon Shims" fit between pads and wheel caliper. When worn they lose black teflon coating and sometimes the end wears off and they drop out causing shutter (or your mechanic did not replace when new pads fitted). Buy new shims (from FORD0) when you buy any brand of pads- they are a few dollars each.
