I have hit the wall on maintaining the old EA and while I've fixed just about every water leak, oil leak, etc etc on the old girl the run of maintenance never stops - now the welch plugs are leaking on the block and I've got a bad lifter or two.

So, either I pull the engine ancillaries off and do the welch plugs (what next?) or after 21 years and 300,000km do I just rebuild the engine and be done with it? I'd like to explore the latter and do some minor additions to the basics while not changing the fact this car is a good original example:

- bottom end balanced
- upgraded rods/pistons with slight comp ratio increase
- new cam (mild - i.e. without having to mod the ECU)
- match port intake manifold to head

Anyone suggest a reputable engine builder who can do this in Brisbane? Any other key suggestions for the engine?

Why not grab a 4.0L, fix that with some minor mods and wack that in? Adding an AU MLS head gasket will help it live a little longer too.

Yeah good idea but I want to keep it original including matching engine number. Nothing wrong with the 3.9.

My 3.9 goes hard (cam and chip + breathing mods) but still I love it.
And they are a better engine to boost aswell.

Take the 3.9 out, wrap it in plastic and put it away somewhere safe. Then fit an AU engine with the EA externals, and enjoy. Then reco the EA 3.9 later, if you decide it's worth the effort. It's cool to have the original engine, etc, but at the end of the day it's an EA, not an XY GT. I think you will be spending a lot of money to achieve very little if you do the 3.9.
But that's just my humble opinion mate. You do what pleases you.
Cheers,
8-)

Hi,

I would go to an EF or EL engine, and keep the old one. Cheap and easy compared to an AU. You could even replace seals and welch plugs before fitting, and do the AU head gasket. Less time off the road, and if you are a bit sneaky you could change the number then destroy the old one.

Matching numbers doesn't make an EA worth any more.

I have a good running AU engine with 137 000km on that i'll sell for $300 strapped to a pallet, All you need to do is organize Toll to pick it up.

You sir should own a commodore, Shame on you.
Obviously I prefer a more classic feel to a falcon, sure I like a clean revving barra but the ef el au motors just don't do it for me, they don't sound tough, they don't get as lumpy as te 3.9s when cammed they dont feel as powerful, an they don't last as long. They just arnt as raw as the 3.9l
I like to have to wait for my car to warm up before she runs right.
Most of all i love beating rice and commos in the simple 3.9.
This is all my opinion, not fact, but I believe it to be true.
Long live the 3.9!

Light up in the wet? I'd hope so.
Should light up anywhere. Mine does haha :/.
Nothing wrong with Hondas, I love old Hondas, my first car was a 1986 SI prelude, 5speed. Flood water killed her. Still search eBay weekly for another.

Probably right except that on average once a fortnight someone approaches me and asks if I'll sell it. Lot to be said for originality and teh EA is still a good looking car in the poster car red manual s pack.
