when i replaced the head gasket in mine i noticed the top guide was broken. i had head machined / pressure tested and put it back together with the broken guide. u can notice a little noise at 4000rpm upwards but not worth worrying about. a lot of people on here have done the same thing.

do u have a gregorys or haynes repair manual?

to replace the guide will be a bit of work.
first zip tie the chain to the cam pulley to stop the chain jumping a tooth.
the power steering pump needs to be unbolted from the head to get to the timing chain tensioner undone and removed,
the harmonic balancer needs to be removed,
the sump dropped a little to remove timing cover and then theres a few problems with possibly dropping the lower guide into the sump too...
u will need a harmonic balancer puller, new timing cover gasket, timing cover seal, silicon or something to stop sump and top of timing cover leaking and associated tools to remove and install all the parts

I agree Elf, I did that with my EB as the Mechanic that did my head at work said it wasn't worth all the effort so, I didn't bother and it ran wonderful for another 12 months when I sold it for the AU.

My original engine ran with the top chain guide broken for at least a year...not sure how long it was broken BEFORE I bought it. Just an annoying rattle at certain rev ranges.

well reading this makes me feel better..
i just ripped my rocker cover off, getting ready for a headgasket replacement [due to excessive oil leak coming from rear of head, but now im sure its just leaking from cover..]
and i noticed that the whole top, left and right, of the chain guide was missing.
i think its been like this for a few years. but from this thread i feel better knowing that it wont crap out on me.
i regularly rev to 5/5500rpm and dont really notice any noise.

mines the same, has no top guide. only thing is though, it rattles at about 1500-2500rpm under light load, ie. driving around the town. gets really annoying, especially when im trying to sell it.
