Hey Bozz, had the same thing happen to me when I did my first cam change over. Apparently if the HLA isnt sitting all the way into the rocker when you tighten the rocker gear down it ends up going in on a slight angle and jams, it eventually goes in but fractures or creates a hair line fracture. Mine didnt break until two days later half way down the 1/4 mile, live and learn I suppose.

Yeh. I just did a cam change.
When i pulled the lifters out, they had a brittle, and F**k oring around them, which kind of holds them in place. As i was putting them back in, with no oring, they were falling out all over the place. A few of mine went in diagonal, but i thought that can't be right, so i undid the middle rocker bolts, and straightened em up and pushed down on the rocker arm so it stayed in place. It worked, and no broken rocker arms. It sucks. Have you damged any valves? |

Datamine: yours would pushed out the side because of all the shims ey?
Mine ripped rocker arms apart. 7 snapped rocker arms, 12 bent valves. 6 dinted pistons... but they're still going strong http://www.effalcon.com/pics/mycar/fail ... 010608.jpg

Continuing on with this saga, (lucky the folks have another car to use!) I reassembled the engine today and attached the starter to it outside the car on the engine stand.
Cyl 1,2,3,5 have 190psi compression Cyl 4 has 150psi Cyl 6 has 170psi I must have damaged the valves when they touched the pistons. Now I have no idea how to do anything with cyl heads except remove and refitting valves using a valve spring compressor, what is the process here? Is it likely that just the valves are shot? I can't see any of them bent in the head and they all seem to be sitting correctly on the seats. Is the valve guide and/or head likely to be damaged or does just the valve bend when they meet up with the piston? Is it better to just remove the valves and send the head to a shop for inspection/repair? How do you test the valve seat seal while the head is off the motor, by attaching something to the intake/exhaust port and pumping air while monitoring if any leaks? Oh, as an upshot, I'm getting good at disassembling/reassembling this motor, head was off in around 30 mins after the compression test |

The bores still have hone marks on them, father is a religious oil changer, every 5,000km the car gets fresh oil and a new filter.
