What could cause this? I was cranking it and two lifters on the intake side broke on the edge flinging the HLA into oblivion.
Could the timing chain have jumped a tooth or two on the crankshaft when its removed? |

the only time i have seen rocker arms break is when the valves have hit the pistons, so your guess may be right.

if the timing was off and the intake valve opened during the combustion stroke, what kind of damage would that cause?

always confirm cam gear is alligned correctly to the balancer, if in doubt, confirm TDC is true.

Yup I think i had a brain f@rt when reassembling it.
Would a tooth or two off cause this? I thought you'd have to be 4-5 teeth off for valve and piston soup Motors coming out anyway to ensure no crap is in the sump |

I remember ARM snapping a cpl of rocker arms when installing a cam, from memory he threw in an EF cam but his EL was a Hybrid (AU head).
His actually snapped when they bolted the rocker gear down. A tooth out wouldn't cause it that's for sure. |

When my engine lunched itself (an auxillary gear failure), all the valves were bent (piston valve lov'n) but the rockers all fine bar one where the HLA decided sideways was a better way. Even the the rocker arm was intact, just a break where the HLA sits.

It may be dodgy but I can guarantee that the chain will not slip off either the cam sprocket or the crank sprocket. And it tends to pull the sprocket and chain a nice distance away from the cam you are working on, keeps the chain tensioner out and allows you to slip the chain and sprocket quickly back onto the new cam.
And it works! What more could you ask for?
