well friday last week old bastard of a delivery guy backed into my rear lh tail light area buggered the beaver panel,smashed the lense,boot and a bit of the 1/4 panel and rear bumper.but thats not my problem, he smashed up my light but the globes were still working. then i took off the brakelight just cos i could, now everything but the brakelights work apart from when i have the headlights on the brake lights come on as if i have my foot on the pedal and stay that way.
just wondering if i should buy 2 new globes and then check it or if anyone else has a suggesetion? cheers

go outside, turn the car on, leave the lights off.
Press the brake pedal. check if the dash/parkers come on. Either that, or theres a break in the wires, stop switch failure etc. Honestly replace the globes regardless, they're like $2 and should be replaced in pairs.

nah i dont think they come on, could it be the brake switch?its located on the brake pedals arm isnt it?

When you took off the brake light, did you make sure the ground wire was reconnected? It sounds like a ground isn't connected. Look for a plug or a crimp that isn't connected too the chassis in the boot.

ohh that could be the problem, is it bolted or spot welded to the boot or something?

Check to make sure the globes are in the correct way. If inserted incorrectly you will get the symptoms as described ie bright lights when lights turned on and now difference when pedal is pushed. Basically take tem out, rotate 180 degrees and reinsert, see what happens then

still havnt found anything?
you cant reverse the actual brake light globe as it has an offset pin/leg, one is higher then the other so it cant sit in the slots in the holder. had a close call today, cop car was a car behind me had to flick the parkers on and off when i was braking so the lights would come on hahaha. but yeah im really stumped. also my cigarette lighter stopped working now:(the surrounding light it on but no go inside arrrgh. i think i might just try fix a couple of problems and flog it off

Shouldn't be able to reverse the bulbs as the locating pins are offset. This offset only allows insertion in one direction only. Blinker bulbs don't have the offset pins but brake/tail lights do.

Have you fitted new bulbs? The impact may have damaged the filament inside the bulb. If you have changed the bulbs, goto the plug in the boot that your tail lights connect too. Turn your headlights on. Get a multimeter on volts and check between the black wire (ground) and a good chassis point in the boot (nut or bare metal). If you get anything above a couple of volts, your black wire is not grounded properly. This ground should be connected too a nut or bolt in the boot. Not sure exactly where it is. Also check the condition of bulb sockets. Have they been damaged? Disconnect one tail light at a time and see what happens.

new globes havnt fixed the problem. checked all the earths the earth bolt is on the drivers side of the boot i undid it and scratched it up and put it back on still no go. could it be the brake switch thing on the brake pedal?

Get yourself a $10 multimeter and do the checks I described above. I doubt wether it's the brake light switch. Set multimeter on the 20V dc range. I'm still sticking with a stuffed ground wire in the boot somewhere. If you want to check your brake light switch, remove both bulbs from the tail lights and get someone to push the brake pedal. Put your red multimeter lead on the brake bulb contact (inside the socket, Careful don't short out anything) and the negative probe on a good chassis point. Are you getting 12v?

yeah sorry i did test it the other night, tested it again just incase. i got nothing with the pedal pushed in, and 12v with headlights on?
