all this talk of cams makes me wonder how much fuel ecconomy did people loose putting in a preformance cam in a ef XR6 much more power gain? and did idle quality change?
just wanted to know because my car has a cam and its been there since i owned the car dont know what type but car idles crap always has and drinks fuel, got some go tho, it was fitted by PRE dyno centre mackay about 5 yaer ago. just wanted to compare economy of stock XR6 and camed XR6. if i had the old cam i'd throw it in for a run just to see the differece.

most cams dont use much extra fuel idle quality is normally good with the tickford ECU, mabe you could try a different cam a lot of research has prob been done in the last 5 or 6 years

talk to Jaysen at ALTED he is one guy I know has put too many hours in R&D of cams and recently created a few monsters.

i dont realy need more power just economy on the highway i'm burning no less then 10L/ 100km what are people getting with xr6 or EF II ghias without cams?

I'm lucky to get 10L/100km with some highway driving with a stock XR6. Can't really improve too much because I think the the revs held due to the 3.45 diff blows it out on them.

I'd say there is something wrong with your cars somewhere.
I did regularly see 8 - 9l/100km on a highway run with my XR cam. My best being an 8.2l/100km on a trip to Albury. So 100 to 110km/h. Whereas my parents NL's at the same time did a 7.8/l100km. If I was getting close to 10l/100km, it would mean I was pushing the car a bit on overtaking and things. I put in a wade 1636 a few months ago, and found the cam is designed around power in the lower rpm range. My off the line power is better, but I think I have lost a little up top. But either way, my 1/4 mile is the same. But as for fuel economy, I now see a a regular 7 - 8l/100km on a steady cruise, with my new best being a 7.6l/100km coming back from Geelong recently. If I push it with the overtaking thing, it will now average in the 9's. |

Last time I drove back from Sydney I had 2 mates in the car, and the boot and back seat was chockers. Dont know how Amanda fitted in the back seat...  But I filled up at Yass and did 720km before the next fill up. Which wasnt bad considering my best range was 820km, with the car completely empty. Both were doing the 100 to 100km/h range, and were using the stock XR cam.
So I think good (good for a e-series anyway) fuel consumption is easily obtainable with a stock or slightly modified cam. But then, I always try to keep my car at the top of its game. New injectors and leads every 12 or so months. Filters, plugs, timing check, etc, every 10,000km. Im guessing that does help. |

Well for me it is only with sum hwy driving... I haven't had the chance to stretch the legs on a long journey yet. Most of my distance is between Cairns and the tablelands and that involves a spirited range to drive

i'm going to get the injectors cleaned when i get a chance, which need doing but apart from that everything is prety good new plugs, leads are also not too old and timing should have been checked with head gasket recently. might be time for a new cam? or maybe try a second hand xr6 cam just put new shims in and see how it goes., id be happy to swap anyone with a stock xr cam

with my XR ECU it isn't too bad - with stock ECU can be a bit difficult to get a nice base idle. it pulls from about 2500rpm upwards!
