this has probably been asked already. i need help with choosing a cam for my 6 cylinder ef.
i looked at the many different types and brands and am just wondering why the idle quality is so important and why the holden cam and other older carby ford motors have really big duration over the e series cams. also i am wondering why the e series need computer recalibration just to run a mild cam when holdens dont. is the computer that restrictive. i was recomended a mild cam with power gains of 1200 - 4500 through the rev range, but i was wondering how much it differes in size or performance to the standard cam. also could someone let me know of there experiences with there choice of cam and the power gain they recieved. part no# also required. my car has a high flow custom exhaust and cold air intake. any help would be appreciated. thanks |

Lots of reasons but it comes down to the e-series computer being MAP sensor based. Its a good setup but not tolerant of changes to the vacuum characteristics of the engine. You just need to keep in mind that you either need to pick a cam to suit the ECU or retune the ECU for the cam.
Mild cams are fine with the std ecu as it will learn and make trims to run the engine. For safety reasons the ECU is only allowed to 'learn' so much and once you push it too far the idle and low end suffers. The top end usually holds together quite well making the car look better on the dyno than it really is.

so basically the ford motors wont have a very lumpy idol because the computer cant tolerate the vacuum change? by the looks of the mild cams how much do they differ from standard?

Bot quite, the ford motors can develop a lump because of the vacuum change (less vacuum, ECU things the engine is under load and put more fuel in).
Mild cams are fine. Moderate cams will cause a lumpy idle but will still drive ok. Anything bigger and your in the s**t. Get a chip to retune the ecu and they are fine. The advantage is that because they are MAP based you dont need a MAF in your intake. Its one less (expensive) thing to restrict the intake. Also have to remember that the 4.0 heads and intake are miles ahead of the old stuff, so small changes are very effective. You can quite easily cam an ford 6 from a stock 110rwkw up to 130rwkw and still have a smooth idle, then up to 140-150 with bit of lump.

sorry if im a pain but what type of cam would u suggest, in the more lumpy side of things if u know what i mean. i know this has probably been asked in other forums but u sound like you know your sh*t. i dont want to blow 500 bucks on a cam that has little difference to the standard one! im not into rice turbos so i want to make power the alternative way

Wade 1636 is my favorite at the moment for stock'ish engines. Works with standard springs, given some impressive results, and cheap ($120).

do u know how much of an increase in power and dose it give it and crisper performance. that cam is well under what i expected to pay. sounds greate

Most people get around 130-135rwkw with the mods you have - definitely noticeable. Best I have seen is Grenchie who got 155rwkw and did a 14.4@96mph pass down the 1/4.
Thats one of the best things about these engines. Cheap and easy cam installs

That cam is one of their newer one so probably hasnt made it into their annual website update

the ported addition of a t head would be rather nice addition to this cam i would think. mark will prolly back me up on this, i hope, but any head change like the t head can only help it produce more power
