Hey All,
Just tried to replace the belt on my daughter's EL and I noticed that the camshaft pulley is sticking out about a cm and does not line up with any of the other pulleys. Any ideas as to what has happened. The pulley isn't loose andturns when I apply a socket to it. Cheers

The crankshaft pulley is a harmonic balancer. It has a rubber dampener inside it. Over time the rubber deteriorates and the two halves start to seperate. You will need a new one & a harmonic balancer puller to get the old one off.

Strange but I had to do mine yesterday, exactly as you described it.The harmonic balancer was sitting out about 10mm and when I got it out the rubber was cracked and little pieces were starting to poke out.And the weird noise it was making are gone after it was replaced.I put in a new seal as well as a drive belt .Parts cost was $120.Cheers Kevman.

Cheers everyone,
Is there a trick to getting them out? Where can I get a puller? Thanks again

You should be able to get a puller at any good tool shop or Bursons, Repco etc
Best bet is to take the radiator out, gives you a lot more room. To loosen the crankshaft bolt if it wont by hand, first remove the coil lead. Then using a socket and a breaker bar, position the beaker bar against the chassis and give the engine a quick short crank. Loosen the bolt but don't remove it entirely. Most pullers need to press against the head of the bolt and if its not there you will damage the crankshaft thread. Fit your puller to the balancer and tighten it until it starts to pull the balancer off. Once it starts to move you can remove the puller and the bolt, it should come off the rest of the way by hand With the balancer off it would be worth changing the timing case seal

I've used that method a few times - works a treat, just make sure your socket and breaker bar are firm - another way to stop the engine firing for a smartlock car is to pull the CRT LP fuse.

I just replaced mine i was able to crack it by hand but had to pull the rad out too get the puller on, just make sure when you put the new one on to use a longer bolt to start off with, while taping it on and doing up the bolt and repeat this process, the normal bolt isnt long enough to start it as i found out the hard way and stripped the end of my crank, had to retapp it
