Hi,
As title states, can a stuffed cat converter cause pinging? Trying to determine whats causing my issue, have replaces plugs and O2 sensor Thanks Dan |

very unlikely, I'd be more inclined to check the ignition timing.

if its significantly blocking exhaust flow, then yes.

It calapsed on me a few months ago but blew the debri out the back i believe, and i havent had a chance to get it replaced just yet. so essentially no its not blocked

Mine blew out some metal, but was still half full. Have you changed the fuel that you use?

cat convertors don't have metal inside so if it blew metal out the back i'd be worried. Last motor I seen do that lost the valve seats mid-stroke and didn't end well to say the least.
It's like a ceramic media inside the cats. There is physically no metal that could come out. When cats fail they need a good length of 2" pipe jammed down there to clear the stuff out, (to get you home only because it's illegal) other wise it rattles around in there. It looks like honeycomb so it's ok for a while untill it bounces around the wrong way and blocks the exhaust. Doubt it would ping but I ended up snapping a compression ring running with an un-identified blocked cat. You will know when the cats blocked, it goes from driving a 6 cylinder family car to driving a 4 cylinder diesel truck, major performance loss.

Metal cats have metal inside.
Mine was metal of some sort. Bloody sharp and not easy to remove. |

my old magnaflow metal core cat failed and lodged itself in the outlet of the pipe causing poor performance and pinging..

metal core cats have metal inside... standard (read:effective) cats have rhodium & something else or some other exotic material. Hence why metal core cats are generally illegal afaik. Ceramic schitt is pretty hard  and believe it or not more resistant to heat than steel.

Yeah im sure the cat was blocked at one point. My mate was driving behind me when it blew out and he said it was white in colour. I guess i should really get around to organising a replacment to see if it helps.

The other thing i forgot to mention was that its a VCT engine with the vct not hooked up. Could it be possible the cam timing somehow be locked between advanced and normal?
