Hi guys
My car has been running really crappily lately. At idle it feels like it's gonna conk out on me but when i rev past 1000rpm to accelerate it's normal again. It first happened two days ago when i started it up in the morning. It was making the entire car shake. Haven't driven it since. It does this every time it goes below 1000rpm. It's an auto too so i can't exactly sit at the traffic lights trying to keep the revs up. Any ideas? |

I had the exact same problem with my '95 EF. Ended up screwing the transmission up by always sitting at the lights with one foot on the brake and one on the accelerator.
I've given up on the motor now and will be replacing it with one from a BA. Last time I had it checked, the head was messed up and letting coolant into one of the cylinders. I'd suggest taking your car to a mechanic and getting it pressure tested.

Time to start saving for a new motor then.

it might be just a dying battery/loose earth or something cheap and easy to fix. Could also be a coil breaking down and just needs replacing.

sound like a map (manifold absolute pressure) sensor has stuffed up, Usually with these the shaking happens then next thing that happens is that engine will conk out just after the engine is started unless you give it revs

Check your leads man, i had exact same problem, replaced them and worked great, also what someone said earlier check your battery terminals.'
Let us know how you go! |

Have you checked anything? Don't just replace the engine haha.
What is you're oil like? Is it cloudy, milky? What's you're coolant like? Any signs of a blown headgasket? Have you tried cleaning you're isc? How is it on fuel? Might be a blocked fuel filter, split vaccume hose, crook lead/s. When you're driving and its "fine" does it still have full power say up hills at WOT? |

Hey guy thanks for all the suggestions. The leads, spark plugs, battery and fuel filter were changed over the last year or so, so i don't think it could be that. I'm not losing any fluids (oil, water, etc.) and the coolant doesn't seem to have any oil or anything in it. And i'm pretty sure the head gasket hasn't blown yet. Although it has had a ticking noise under the rocker cover for a while but i was planning on getting a new head in the next few months anyway (one of my mates reckons the ticking noise is coming from my valves and lifters which are screwed apparently).
So all that leaves is either a vacuum leak, map sensor and maybe coil pack. And no i haven't tried to clean my isc (don't know what that is). I'm kind of a n00b so i don't know how to check these things. Any help would be appreciated. |

You can't really say all that leaves if you're a n00b.
Find out what you're isc is and clean it. Use the search function on the home page to find it. What fuel do you use? If you run regular or e10 and keep it under a quarter tank fairly often no reason you're fuel filter couldn't be blocked. Why does you're mate reckon you're valves are stuffed if you have a noisy lifter? |

Yeah i meant "all that leaves" as in i checked all of the things that everyone suggested except for a possible vacuum leak, map sensor, the coil pack and isc which i haven't checked because i didn't know how to check them. Oh yeah and 3 seconds after i posted i saw a post called "how to check isc".
To answer your questions i've been using premium fuel and about the noisy lifters my mate in Cairns did that thing where you use a screw driver as a stethoscope and said the noise was coming from under the rocker cover so he took it off and said it was coming from the top end somewhere. Also he said one of my "guides" may be broken. Could this be why my car is shaking below 1000rpm or do you reckon it's something else? I don't really want to take my car to a mechanic and pay him $200 just to tell me my cylinder head is broken when i'm planning to get it replaced anyway. |

If you have broken guides it could be timing chain noise.
But what do you mean by shaking below 1000rpm. Is it sitting at 750rpm and shaking violently. Is it hunting eg going from 1000rpm to 750 to 900 to 500 almost stalling. All we can do is suggest things for you to check. We can't tell you deffinantly what it is. And if you don't check what we suggest we can't make more suggestions. Have you cleaned you're ISC? |
