hi guys,

went to start the car this morning ('96 EL Fairmont i6) and all i get is the engine cranking with no start, even with accelerator to the floor. The fuel guage reads quite low, but trip computer says theres 40km left. How do i tell if i've completely run out of fuel or if something worse has happened. The car ran perfectly up until this morning...

either fuel or spark usually, if fuel quite low might have trouble picking it up

check ur sparks. if u do hear the pump kicking in that means it should be running fine. maybe ur leads as well.

could be coil or module if it has no spark... but look at the pump first, if you cant hear it, bang the tank with a pole and it may start working again

I drove my car to the shop, got back home, went to start it to move it and nothing, the coil had died. Was a fidly job replacing it (lowered and no car stands) but all good now

If you can hear the pump it is probably ok. However they can fail and still be running.

I'd be checking your coil first. To check coil remove coil lead from dissy cap and attach spark plug to it. Then earth spark plug and get someone to crank engine over. A good large spark should be seen. If you have a weak or no spark coil is stuffed.

how much to replace the coil?... btw if i hit the fuel tank from underneath i can definitely hear fuel moving but not sure how much there is. The fuel guage reads in the lower red zone and tripmeter says 40km.
