well.. got a chance to test my theory last night as the car lost throttle response and eventually stopped.
I calmly popped the boot .. gave my inspection plate a spank 2 or 3 times and went back and turned the key... broom broom... off we go again! 
so I think I'm definately leaning towards the fuel pump. It didn't play up for the rest of the night.. but I think I'll try it one more time to be sure. In the meantime - I'll start shopping around for replacement fuel pump. cheers Damo

well got to test my theory and temporary fix going to the shops the other night... 3 times it died on the way there .. and twice on the way home!
 getting pretty frustrating at this point...
yet the banging on the inspection plate in the boot seems to fix it. Those who have changed the fuel pump.. did you have to drop the tank out? or is it straight forward to get to (like straight under the inspection plate). ? Damo

ask phongus on the specifics when he gets back on, he's done it before but I can tell you now you don't have to drop the fuel tank, its supposed to be rather straight forward.

you can pull the pump out through the boot. its pretty simple just dont break the clips on the fuel lines.
it's under the inspection plate.

fuel pump removal
remove inspectionplate disconnect fuel pump wiring start car, relieve pressure remove fuel hoses, push the clamp into the hose i.e. away from pump remove outer holding ring, big black ridged ring around the pump lift out cradle walla theres the pump.

new fuel pump has arrived.. now just gotta get some time to install it.. probably over the weekend or something..
let hope its the problem. I miss driving the reliable Fairmont around.. Damo

Well.. now that I get down to business, with the help of a mate with more mechanical knowledge than I - it turns out that my fuel pump is ok - its just not getting power every now and again.
Which means it could be either dodgy wiring or dodgy relay... I'll have to follow the electronics to find out where the fault is. It still doesn't help that the problem is not constant either - thats making it a real pain in the butt!!..
Sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't... Does someone have a wiring diagram for the EF Fairmont? or can someone tell me which relay is for the fuel pump.. ? cheers Damo

hey mate. According to the gregory's manual, in the EL the fuel pump relay is behind the battery...underneath the coolant bottle. The fuel pump relay is connected to the Green relay holder. There is another Relay there which is the ECU relay...that is connected to the brown relay holder...so make sure you pull out the relay from the green connector.
According to the manual for the EL the live wire that is connected to the battery is Black with yellow stripe. Hopefully the the EF's are the same with that colouration of wires and relay holders. By the way relay may not be the problem if you keep banging on the access cover...its most likely a loose wire at the fuel pump connection... Hope that helps mate phong =P~

Hope that helps mate phong =P~ underneath the coolant bottle you say..? hmmm. interesting I will have to have a look this evening yeah - I thought a bang on the access cover was fixing it.. but it wasn't a fool proof fix.. sometimes it didn't work.. could have just been coincidence to confuse me some more!!

phong - fuel pump relay was found exactly as described..
now the next question is where to get another one? of course I did the obvious thing first and called Ford... $117.oo !! ?? for a relay? damm 
Surely there is somewhere else I can get one for half the price at least.. thats crazy money for a relay. Suggestions?

Just in case anyone was still interested - problem seems to be solved.
Went and bought another fuel pump relay from the wreckers for $10 just to see if it made a difference. it did for a little while, but didn't seem to permantly fix the problem. So its a wiring issue somewhere between the ECU to the fuel pump. Too much to go through. Cheapest and easiest option was just to wire in my own power with a new relay using the ignition as a switch.. it now looks something like this 
yeah - I know, its an ugly looking setup - but it works for now. I'll tidy it up a bit more at a later stage.. Thanks for everone's input Damo

its connected to the on switch, not the accessories - so power is only supplied when the motor is running. Damo

so that when you roll the car, the fuel pump keeps pumping. beauty. sounds like a barbecue waiting to happen. the pump needs to stop when the donk does.
