This is a similar problem my car suffered. Took on most hot days/after driving about two goes to get it going. A few weeks later the fuel pump s**t itself, was a scary experince, (though dad was driving) lost steering and brakes, went straight on as we were turning the corner. But id say it may be the fuel pump.

call it a hunch.. but try turning key to ACC position for half a second before you fully turn the key and it'l start first time every time. on mine and a few others it does anyway

Steering goes hard, but its not undriveable :p especially not when moving. And if you lose brakes, youre in big trouble.... There should be a non return line installed so that you dont lose vacuum once the motor turns off. Should be enough vacuum left for a few presses of the brake pedal

Yeah the steering became extremely heavy and dad only just turned it, as it was going up hill, and he didnt expect it. The brakes yeah they had a lil left in them at the time, but after that they kinda went to the s**t, but were still working.

I have this problem at the moment, starts first time in the mornings, but once driven if it sits for more than 30mins its hard to start, have to press the accelerator a little. Injectors and Fuel Filter were replaced 15ks ago and fuel pump about 25ks ago. I'm gonna replace the leads dizzy cap and plugs soon, will let you know.

I had the same problem on my car and it really did my head in coz it was completely intermittent and couldnt find a pattern of when it would happen. No mechanic or even ford themselves could give a definitive solution. One day i turned to acc, then turned on a sec later and it fired up straight, so as a joke thought to myself "what if that makes it work".. funny enough it NEVER happened after i started turning the key differently. The day i try turn the key normally it will struggle to start.

Since then i have talked to at least 6 or 7 EF/EL owners with the same problem, and when i tell them what i do they all tell me that it works! My mechanic puts it down to some sort of strange electrical fault that would probably cost more to diagnose/fix than what its worth.

... And thats why i think it could work :D

Do you leave it on ACC or IGN for a sec or two - if it's the fuel system it might take a sec to prime properly?

I thought that as well at one point, but im not too sure. I leave it on long enough that the petrol/temp gauges flick into position, which i think is approx 1 second if not lower..
