so heres the story, I've just converted the old cfi to mpfi i have conected the pink wire so i have spark and i have also checked that i have fuel. i have changed the ecu and all the parts are from a series 1 fairlane. I got the car to start last night but was over fueling like mad and filled the driveway with black smoke so i shut it off and came back to it this mourning and it wouldnt start. so i changed the dizzy to a mpfi dizzi and it still wont go i have checked all my wiring and its all hooked up apart from the grey/white wire but i dont think i need that to start the car. After i changed the dizzi i decided to check the spark plugs which were very dirty and not sparking because of the over fueling so there may not have been a problem with the cfi dizzi. have i screwed up the timing on the mpfi distributor?

well start by cleaning your plugs, lighter and sandpaper should do the trick.

If it's overfueling I would check MAP, TPS and O2 sensors. Double check all connections. Also did you use the sensors from the MPFI manifold or did you screw in your old sensors?

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).

MAP is the primary load sensor for your engine. -it tells the ECU how much fuel to inject. TPS also affects how much fuel gets injected but ususally for acelleration enrichments. and as a backup for the MAP.

The MAP sensor will be a black box on your firewall with a vaccum hose going to the manifold. The TPS is on the side of the throttle.

You car will need both of these to start and run the car properly.

i re fitted the cfi distributor and timed it so it must have been the over fuel'd dirty plugs all along!!! THIS MAKES ME ANGRY AT MY STUPIDITY

You will HAVE TO use the mpfi dizzy. They are different to the CFI.

If you use the CFI one, you will end up using alot of fuel.

And blowing lots of black smoke and hard to start/no start could be the MAP. The vaccum hose on the manifold falls off easy.

And yes, you do need the grey white wire. Thats the isc control. If its not connected the car wont start without you holding the throttle open, as well as not idling once its started.

never bothered with ISC on any of my cars, idles a bit rough for the first few seconds then it sorts itself out, and for the mpfi dizzy/cfi dizzy have done 3 conversions all with the cfi dizzy in place and no dramas at all, never ran rich, and never missed a beat, all done on ea's

it started with the cfi dizzi and without the grey white wire and is not blowing alot of black smoke, but it is not running on 3 cylinders. i think this is because the gasket is not sealing on these 3 or could it be something more major?

The reason you need the MPFI dizzy is because of the design of the chopper wheel on the inside.

A CFI dizzy has 6 equally sized vanes on the wheel. A MPFI dizzy has one vane half the size of the rest. This allows the ECU to see cylinder 1, and inject fuel at the right time. Using the CFI dizzy will work, but it will inject fuel evey time is sees a vane. Whereas using the MPFI will inject fuel every 3rd crank revoultion, like a semi-sequential injection system.

It wont make it run rich, although it may smell a little rich at startup, it will cause you to use a fair bit more fuel than is necessary.

As for starting without the grey/white wire being connected. I can only guess that someone has upped the base idle screw, otherwise it normally will not start unless you held the throttle open.

will not having the mpfi dizzy cause a slight miss at idle?
