wasnt sure if this would be a good place to put it but i figured that most ppl read the 6 cylinder forums.
recently, i am having troubles getting my car started on gas, it turns over then starts then dies... i press accellerator..nothing. (i know some ppl start their cars on petrol first but ive never had to do that) anyway, i thought ill just start on petrol and switch over to gas. so i let the engine warm up and then switched it over to gas, it switches then dies. so then i start up on petrol and then give it a rev, switch it over to gas, revs go down, i press accelrator.. nothing, no response, then the car dies. im really stumped, cos if i go and try start my car now it will probably work. but i wont to know why it is doing this? do you guys need any more info? 1995 ef xr6, duel fuel. i recently got a new cam installed but i dont think its related as i remember i had this problem ages before and the problem corrected itself, and also ive had the ecu reset for over a week and i think it should have relearnt everything by now. any advice/tips would be grateful. PS - how much would it cost to get injectors cleaned out.

s**t there are so many possibilities, it sounds like a safety switch / module type problem.
I know on the old setups with a safety switch, if you lost pulse from the coil then it would do exactly what you've described, it would let gas through to start, but if it didn't get a pulse from the coil then it would die out. Maybe try getting a power tester on the lockoff and get someone to start it and change to LPG, see if it's cutting the power to it when the car dies... If it is then you know 100% it's an electrical problem. |

Mounted either on or near the convertor, there will be 2 lock offs there but both run the same power anyway.
If the light goes out on the tester when the car dies then it's electrical. It's probably the easiest thing to start with to eliminate anyway. |

That small black unit with the 2 wires running to it, test the red wire while the car is running and watch it as the car dies to see if it drops power.
There will be another lock off, follow that copper line down to it and if you can test both. |

Sounds as if it's letting gas through to start but then cutting it off.
It could be the convertor too, just thought it would be best to do the easiest test and see where you need to go from there. |

It's on the side, there is a course and a fine, fine is the bigger screw with the spring on it.
Did you use a test light to see if it's holding power at the lock off yet? |

so they are both idle screws?
1 is course 2 is fine am i correct? so if i want to adjust idle its those screws there? where are the screws that u use to adjust air/fuel mixtures? Walker: the car runs on gas now... the wire was loose. i dont have a test light though

Well there ya go.
Yeah 2 is fine idle, don't play with the course too much as it does affect the power adjustment aswell. Screw # 2 in until she starts to drop then slowly turn it out until you just reach a nice idle. If you don't get any reaction from the fine then do the same with # 1, but only a bit at a time as it's pretty sensitive. |
