ok looking to do a coolant change very soon and im
wondering how to get the car up. should i use car ramps to get the front end up or axle stands? im abit reluctant to use the ramps cos ive heard a few horror stories about them. anyones thoughts and ideas on this would be great. thanks Kezz

you need to get the front end up? lol, just undo the bolt at the bottom (its plastic btw), do the bolt back up, and fill with new s**t. Don't worry about ramps.. but if you really want, use ramps.

I'd use both, ramps to get it up, stands as a fail safe...just in case.

just use some good sturdy ramps n put bricks behind the rear wheels.
only problem can be is getting the car on the ramps...my car is sitting at factory ride height and it still started to scrape on the ramps on the way up n down.

Ramps + Stands for me, couldnt imagine a worse feeling than being under a car n hearing a ramp or something give way n seeing the car fall!
The stands i use are bloody strong, but still use the stands unless im not getting under the car.. better to be MUCH safer then VERY sorry lol. Both my cars being lowered fairlanes have had small issues gettin on my ramps even tho they are big long ones; stock there was no issues but.

yeah my lane's too low for ramps so its a jack (Its even a tight squeeze for the trolley jack) and stands. Sit the weight of the car on the stands and leave the jack just touching.
Then do a Bart Simpson and give the car a bit of a shake before you get under to make sure it's not going anywhere if you have to pull around on something undrneath.

It will do more than "rub" hehe! *crash, scraaaaaaatch* *swearing* *tears* As nfghia said make them longer or use trolley jack, the trolley jack only just and i mean JUST fit under my old lane, it gets under the fbt alright; however i did make sure when i got ramps that i got the longest i could get, had trouble getting them home even = fairlane not long enough to fit them, LOL!

Not so long ago a 35 year old guy died under a car after it fell on him. His poor mother tried to help him but couldn't. Imagine that scenario as your own. Ramps are not all just ramps. At TAFE in the 80's the teacher showed us a cheap ramp(?) where the welds had broken causing it to collapse. If you use ramps make sure you have structurally sound ones. If you use stands, then use structurally sound ones. Whatever you use always have an additional 'backup' such as a rim and tyre etc under the sill. Chock the wheels. Pull the handbrake on. Do your work on level ground too!
Oh yeh, here's an experience of mine. Back in about 91 a mate came to my place with his HJ. I was checking his rear brakes for him but I only had the old scissor jack handy to lift the car. For some stupid reason I stuck my head under the backing plate to look at the adjuster. As I was pulling my head out from under the car the whole lot fell straight down onto the ground. It all happened very quickly and there were milli seconds in it. Made me sit back for a second and contemplate things like fate and etcs. Be carefull.

ok my car is lower than stock height.
so am i better of going for stands? also to jack the whole car up, where abouts are the jack points located? sorry guys if the answer seems obvious, im new to all this DIY servicing.
