My recently purchased EA MPFI and 3 spd auto runs really good until it encounters stop and start traffic then it gets really hot and nearly boils. When back on an open road the temperature still remains excessively high and will only cool down after stopping for a long time. The radiator is nearly new and I have tried a new thermostat, and I don't know what to try next, any help is appreciated.

can u hear it nearly boiling? im thinking it might be corrosive stuff between the connector and gauge on ur dash it happens sumtimes .. if u can hear it boiling start to worry .. if the guage is on high in the car but the motors not actually boiling slow down .. and check

Check if it's blocked in a way flush it then the trick is get a 4 litre bottle the capacity of one of those cars is 15 litres fill up that 4 litre bottle until you reach 16 litres if it doesnt hold 16 litres you might be blocked
thats the way i did it on my EL

if it gets hot at high speed then there is a flow problem in your cooling system. check your radiator first, how old is it?

Also I have noticed once a few years back that my EL was running up around the "R" (very Hot)on the Temp gauge for a while.
So I flushing out and checking the Cooling system thoroughly then filled it back up with Coolant, only to find the problem still happening the next day. After going to my Local Ford Spareparts guy for advice I then replaced the 3 Relays behind the passenger headlight as he suggested and the Temp went back to normal operating temp which is around the " A-M" on EL's

there could be a coulpe of reasons why it is gettin hot ..
1, water pump is stuffed. 2, viscus fan hub is stuffed. option 2 is most common..

Check your fan. Sounds like the viscous hub on it has shat itself. Just grab it and try to spin it. It should have some resistance when cold but not much. Then do the same once you get it hot. It should get increasingly difficult.

The fan is firm when cold but it freewheels when the car is at normal temp, I haven't had it in traffic to overheat it since my first post

if you have had the car for quite some time they build up a layer of crap between the radiator and air con condensor, check by lifting the little cover on the rad support and shining a torch down to check.
also check thermostat is operating correctly to, some people temd to take them out and that only makes the situaton worse cos the water flows too fast to cool down.
