Iv done a motor swap on my 1992 EB and im trying to ger it running right
It was a 4.0L auto but i swaped it with a 3.9 manual out of an Ea spack Both are MPFI motors i used the Intake manifold of the 4.0l

now the problem is When i go to drive it as the revs pick up it misses and back fires violently(flames out the back kind) the motor is running realy rich and fouling the plugs up often.
It idels fine but back fire occasionaly.
Ive done the timing a number of times doing it with the computer thing on and off but both didnt help.
Is thier a RPM range the timing should be done at also i am useing the 4.0l compuer.

Any Help Please

no offence but the 3.9 motor is worse then the 4.0

You haven't done the timing correctly.

And I know what you are thinking "you've checked it a million times" on the marking on the harmonic balancer... and heres where the problems start.

It is extremely common for the outside of the harmonic balancer which has the timing markings to slip on the rubber ring that connects it to the main harmonic balancer part meaning your timing is completely out to s**t if you attempted to adjust your timing based on this. I had the same issue after an engine rebuild that I couldn't even start the motor until I took it to a mechanic.

The only way to check if your harmonic balancer has "spun" is to put it to TDC then pop the rocker cover off and check that the marking line on the cam is inline with the top of the head on the right hand side(you may have to rotate the harmonic balancer another 360 degree's if it is on the other side)

Either that or keep moving around your dizzy around in different directions until it sounds right.

yes i have checked that already but good point

It is running extreamly rich i think that may be the problem because when driving as the revs biuld up it gets better also you can smell the petrol in the black smoke stronger than a whores cheap perfume so far i have dome 24 kms since the transplant and it could be the computer relearning also the computer is out of a 4.0l auto
What do you thinK?

map sensor is attached to the firewall behind the inlet manifold,it has a hose and a plug going to it,,check them.

no
as long as they are mpfi.
the only difference is auto to manual and eb2 came with smartlock but the ea one will still work if the eb is smartlock and there is no performance gains from 3.9 to 4.0 ecu
