This happened to my nans car, once whilst my uncle was drivign it along, then it died in the driveway just before it was to be put in the garage. Turns out it was the fuel pump.
When you turn the key to "on" from "acc", you should hear the fuel pump whine for a bit as it charges the lines. If this doesn't happen, there's your answer. That was an EB2 4.0 wagon with a full tank of petrol ... |

3 days ago I was coming home during a very heavy rain burst, I turned a corner and the car started to splutter, I pumped the gas, it spluttered some more then died... I rolled to the side of the road.
I waited a couple of seconds before restarting, and it started ok and off I went. Wierd though, never had that happen... prolly some water got into the engine bay.

Quote: The ignition was firing like normal & even started for about 2 seconds then shuddered & cut out. This carried on for about 1/2 an hour where the engine would start then immediatly cut out. dont know if this is any help, but my mates car died going around a corner and would crank, fire and run for a second or 2 then stop... finally traced it to the air flow meter. it had a recent service and they didnt do up the inlet duct properly and it was drawing in air after the sensor. may want to consider checking the sensor and connections... not sure what other sensors may cause this problem.. maybe MAP sensor? just a suggestion.[/quote]

payaya - did the smartlock light come on when it cut out? i had this problem. smartlock activating while i was driving. my guess is that it was a loose wire somewhere cause i've had the dash out a few times and now it doesn't do it.

Ok.. There goes that idea.
Late EL's, and I'm lead to believe the hybrids, got a fuel pump that is the same as what went into the AU. The first AU1's had a design fault in that when the fuel level was low, and a corner was taken quickly, it would cause the fuel pump to starve and either cause the engine to almost stall, or stop altogether. A revised intank pickup filter fixed that problem. |

Thanks adrian!

Thanks adrian! I think its a known issue with Ford. I remember lots and lots of posts about this in FF.com a few years back. They all ended with the same resolution, a revised pickup filter, and no further problems. But whether you walk into Ford and expect them to know that is exists or there was a Technical Bulletin on it, I don't know. |

id change the fuel pump, probably in need of a change anyway if your saying its whining etc. Does anything else happen on the dash cluster when it dies? does it start straight away?
my car was stopping and not starting, turned out to be the ecu module |
