My car's using a fair bit of petrol and it's annoying the s**t out of me.
I took it into G&D and they gave it a carbon clean which fixed the idle but not the fuel problem. They also done a diagnostics test on it and said all the sensors were ok. It has a corroded rear muffler (stock exhaust) and a crack in the rocker cover. The guy at G&D said the crack is nothing to worry about. It doesn't blow smoke but the exhaust smells fumy. What could be causing this excessive consumption? |

even though they said you sensors are fine id start by checking your oxy sensor.
it might show up as working, but it might not be accurate. also how old are your injectors? they were the 2 things that made a big difference for fuel consumption on my car |

i'd try a new oxy sensor first, and then make sure theres nothing interfering with the map sensor.
and maybe reset the ecu. at least then the comp has a base to start from with a fresh oxy. as well, how bad is bad economy and what model?

It went down an 1/8 in 13km.
Also it doesn't blow smoke anywhere but the exhaust does smell a bit overfumy. I'll try a whole tank run when I get my P's. Also I heard you can clean the oxygen sensor, how would I do that? |

a cracked rocker cover usually needs replacing, cause you can lose vacuum, no matter how small the crack. My rocker cover have a tiny gap between the gasket and the head and my fuel eco went to shot. After i fixed it, it had much better fuel eco.
If you say all the sensors are in good nick, then check the fuel line, see if there are any small leaks along it. Check around the fuel pump, see if all is good there. If all is well there then i guess it would narrow it down to sensors...MAP or O2 are main suspects. phong =P~

rocker cover hey?
would that include using an old gasket to put it back on? mines ok with fuel but doesn't idle quite that good and i wouldn't recomend cleaning the oxy. when they're gone they're gone

the fuel pump itself isnt regulated. it runs flat out the entire time the car is running. the fuel pressure regulator regulates how much pressure is allowed into the rail. the more pressure the more fuel, having said this ultimatly it is the ecu's job of determining how much fuel is to be let into the combustion chamber by varing the injector pulse and duration. this is determind by data received from various eng sensors. ie. coolent temp, tps, o2 sensor, etc etc

fiftyone wrote: or the pressure reg has siezed cooling temp sensor maybe.. but yeah injectors or oxy sensors, if a fuel line was gone it would leak fuel and you would c it and smell it everytime u had the car running.. even if the pressure reg had seized they have a return line dont they for excess fuel to return to the tank??
