Hey guys, sometimes when I go to turn my car off it simply just won't.
I can take the keys out and it'll still run, but only with the headlights on. But once I turn off the headlights the car turns off as though I've turned the key off (WTF???). Turns off normally with the headlights off it's only when their on? Any idea on wtf this could be? I've also noticed I can turn on my interior light without the switch if I thump the steering column. Seems weird as hell. |

Oh it's an EF II Ghia (Tickford).
Also has many other symptoms that may be related. Low idle in gear when warm Won't crank sometimes at all (I adjusted the linkages yesterday for the shifter and it seems ok now) Excessive fuel consumption (15-16 liters atm) Stutters around 1800RPM when cruising (happens when barely depressing the pedal, constant speed) Power is crap under 2000RPM (this randomly changes) Everything's been serviced and it has new leads, thermostat and Oxy sensor. |

Have you pulled the codes from the computer to see whats in it?
Has anything been wired in aftermarket that might cause these issues? Sounds like somebody has added something... Its not a common Ford problem put it that way... Cheers, Tim

Nothing aftermarket in it whatsoever, besides a head unit which wasn't soldered, bought the correct adapter for my dash loom. |

No codes both from run and from KOEO?
Something seems rather odd then... You don't have a mice issue or looms rubbed through to earth somewhere... I'll nearly be swapping the dash loom... Just sounds like its a mess...

Agreed, sounds like an electrical problem. where the headlight signal is managing to connect directly to the 'ignition' circuit - keeping the engine running once it's going. Do the headlights have any light (or check with a voltmeter) when off, and engine is running? it may not be enough to actually cause them to light up.

when it does it, unplug the 3 pin connector on the alternator, and see if it turns off then, if so, the alternator is fautly.

Yeah i had the same issue as uniacidz. My brake light globe was in the wrong way.
If I had my headlights on with my foot on the brake i could take the keys out and it would keep going. Dont understand the connection between the two but it does exist Adam

Brake light globes have offset pins and only go in one way though?

You'd be surprised how some people manage to squeeze globes in.
Could even be from using the wrong globe. 24v one or single contact. |

So if you forced and scream and twist and cry they do go in backwards?

Sometimes you can manage to put them in backwards with ease, the boys that drive the asplundh trucks do it all the time, one of their trucks came in the other day with the dash lights coming on when they put their foot on the brake or vica versa.. they had jamed a single contact globe in and the contact was joining the park and stop light terminals in the globe holder together
