i put a wade 1604 cam in my EB yesterday and after i gave the ECU a reset it was running really good.
after a bit of spirited driving the car now doesnt like revving over around 3000rpm.
kinda feels like its running out of gas (havent run the car on petrol for some time lol), but its got 3/4 tank.

so the car was running fine, great infact for about 2 hours, then this.

Image

so far i have tried/checked:
blocked cat
tested the car on both gas and petrol - rules out fueling issue
checked and adjusted the timing
adjusted accelerator cable

the current suggestions are:
valve springs causing the lifters to pump up due to not being stiff enough
cam timing

my other thoughts are that it may be leads or the coil, which ill replace tonight to see if it makes any difference.

any thoughts?

cheers

Have you re-checked the cam? The lobes may have shrunk during your "spirited" driving

Have you reset the timing chain tensioner properly?????
How is the dizzy shaft movement/play ????????

the dizzy is fine, i'm fairly certaint the tensioner is fine.

but i did do a bit of ghetto s**t lol

i didnt want to pull the tensioner all the way out, so i just loosened it enough to get the cam gear back on, but when i tightened it back up the chain was tight.

before i replace the valve springs ill pull the rocker gear off and check all the lifters and ill re tension the timing chain just to rule it out.

again, i think that if the car ran fine for 2 hours after the install then it changed, then the tensioner should be fine also.
but im willing to be proved wrong :)

id just like to find the problem lol

If the chain was really tight then maybe the tensioner is getting jammed in the timing cover, remove it and make sure it can slide in and out very freely, might need wet and dry to clean up the hole.
Was the timing chain singing?

did you mean singing or swinging? lol

there was a good amount of pressure on the chain, and the tensioner was only released enough for me to get the cam gear back on , which really wasnt much at all - but i guess it could have been enough to upset it.

is there a way i can check the cam position without having proper dial in tools?

like at TDC, what should the valves be doing on piston number one?

would have to assume it should be between lobes?

karaoke haha, nah when the chain is too tight it will sing or make a whining sound. mine did it after i put a vernier gear on.So i freed up the tensioner and prob fixed.
Im not saying this is the major prob but it is a problem you dont need. :D

mm indeed lol

wouldnt exactly look forward to replacing a timing chain or associated parts.

its too cold to work on the car after work so ill have to wait until the weekend.
im hoping its not the valve springs, and dont see how a mild cam could have pushed the stock springs to their limits.

if i replace the springs, tensioner and make sure the cam timing is right....what else could it be?

is this what could be happening to my valve springs?
http://www.engr.colostate.edu/high_spee ... 000fps.wmv

have done alot of research into this, so thought id post the s**t i found for others to read as it might pop up from time to time
http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/what-si ... 97525.html
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=KsY ... q=&f=false

some good info on reading a vacuum gauge to trouble shoot
http://www.earlycuda.org/tech/vacuum2.htm

some info from another site

(9) Weak Valve Springs - Are you installing a bigger cam, higher ratio rockers or revving the engine harder? Think you’ll make more power? Maybe not if you don’t address the valve springs. If your engine goes flat at upper RPMs or during teardown you notice the valve’s keeper grooves are beaten up, you may need more spring pressure. Of course you could always rent some Spin-Tron time and find out for sure, but I’m sure that fits most racers budgets. Many of the cam designers and valve spring manufactures have this testing device. Find out which do and take their advice.

lets hope its the answer lol

You loosened it a bit then screwed it back in????? Your a TOOL......loosening it a little bit makes it jump into the next lock, then you screw it back in on that lock, adding extra un-needed tension......well done!!!......your on your way to stuffing it.
Fkn amateurs.

yeah thanks mate, thats a helpful post...

like i said, i checked the tension and it was not tight nor loose.

i needed the car running to get me to work and didnt have the right tools on me to do the tensioner properly...
so i did what i could to get the car running.

i may be an amature but your the tool buddy :)

Ahh, man I can feel the love on here tonight..

have you checked your fuel filter? i know you said you ran it on gas and petrol to rule it out, but its a cheap item that may get it a touch happier on fuel.

I doubt you have valve bounce. have you reset the ECU? it may be wigging out and going into limp home mode?

sorry of you have already mentioned some of these things as being looked at already.

Calling cjh a tool won't help. everyone knows he is a tool already.

i know it was a s**t thing to do, but really had no choice.
and as i said, i made sure the chain wasnt overly tight.

i have reset the ECU and yeah, still no good.

the car will hold the revs at 4000rpm, thats it lol
