hey recently my car hasnt been starting its like when you leave it in drive and try to turn the key then nothing happens so to overcome it i have had to some times place it in nuetral for it to start but now it wont start in any gear have tryed rapidly goin though the gears then slaming it into drive but nothing what could it be need urgent help cheers shoey

This and the comination the BEM might be failing also, This is the plastic box behind the panel at your left knee. But my money is on the selector switch which tells the car not to start in drive,1,2,3+reverse.

i have an ef so no BEM so whats the switch called an in hibitor switch? and do you know where about on the tranny it is? cheers

All EF's have a BEM.
As for the Inhibitor switch, Its located on the LHS around about 1/3 down from the front of the transmission, Its a White plastic odd shaped box, check the wiring first as it could be damaged, also deribis and it may even be loose and giving a false reading! ...my bad, I've just read the book, while your under there make sure the linkages are firm as this also adjusts the inhibitor switch!

hey bud i had a prob like this with my ef jus try 2 bang on the bottom of the dash at ur left knee while holdin the key turned over the whole way cause it sounds like ur smartlock
it mite work did with mine |

Replace the bem, or resolder the whole lot, its a common problem!

Yeh, if banging on the BEM fixed the issue, just pick up a new BEM from the wreckers - easy fix!

do they sell them new??
My xr6 did it, the inhibitor switch was out and the bem stuffed up intermittantly. my fix was rip it out and re-solder the starting circuit of the bem, and adjust the linkage. it hasnt played up since.

ok pulled the bem out doesnt look to be anything wrong with the circuit bourd and also now the car wont start buy hitting it maybe it is the inhibitor switch what do people think?

well the bem will look fine, just the solder joints will be the problem.
bypass the inhibitor switch and see if it starts (make sure it's in P). It could be something simple like the plug has fallen off. see if you have power at the starter when the key is in the start position.

could also be the contacts on the back of the ignition, these are also known for dismembering themselves from the barrel!

i haven't put an inhibitor switch on a falcon for a while.
the inhibior switch test - there is a 4-pin plug. 2 pins are for the reverse light, the other 2 are for the start lock-out. just check which one is reverse lights and which one is park/neutral. loop a wire to the correct one and it should start (if this is the problem). to test power at the starter solenoid terminal (small wire at starter) just use a test light. also, pull the interior light FUSE out and see if it cranks. if it does, the problem is in the smartlock. another check, next to the battery there is a piece of plastic covering 4 RELAYS. pull the cover off, and the most rearward relay is the start relay. if the relays in front of it are the same (i can't remember if they are), just swap it around and see if it works. hope that helps.
