hey guys, after degreasing the engine & probably getting all the wires wet in the process the car isnt startin anymore.
it started directly after i degreased the engine but after about 2 weeks of sitting there it didnt start, only the spark plugs were working. brought the battery to an auto electrician who charged it & tested it. when i put it back in i had to leave the key turned for about 10 seconds without anything turning or sparking then all of the sudden it turned over & worked. and now of course the next day its not working. so now 2 weeks later the lights & electrics still work but it wont turn over, theres fuel still coming along the rails but no spark & it wont crank over either Ive recently had the alternater replaced a year ago & the baterry is about a year and 10 months old. is this more a starter motor problem? how hard are they to replace.. i just need to get it started to take it to the mechanics. At least ive already got my new car. cheers, sorry about the long description

does ur car have smartlock??? if it does check the BCM/smartlock box
i was cleaning my engine and 10 minutes later it wouldnt start. turned out my smartlock box was fried, which was weird cuz the light on the dash still flashed, and the door locks worked. i replaced mine with one from a wrecker and it fixed my car |

smartlock would be under the dash above the handbrake. it is a yellow or red box.
take it out and check the circuit board (mine was fried board) when u put it back it u have to leave the ignition in the on position for 30 minutes so it knows the ignition codes, or something like that. |

Is it trying to turn over? Can you hear the starter motor engaging?

If you can't hear the starter motor operating at all, it could only be a handful of things:
1. Smartlock 2. Inhibitor switch (if it's an auto) 3. Starter relay 4. Starter solenoid 5. Starter motor 6. Wiring / earth Rule out the easy ones first. Turn the key to the "ON" position. Remove the starter relay and bridge out the connectors on the loom where pins 87 and 30 go. If the motor now turns over you can rule out 4 and 5. If the motor starts and runs you can't completely rule out 1, but it makes it a fair bit less likely. Then test the relay by hooking up pins 85 and 86 to the battery (polarity isn't important) and listen / feel for a click. If it clicks then the relay is fine and you can rule out 3. Otherwise replace the relay. If you get this far and still haven't worked out what it is, test the inhibitor switch. Look on the loom for the starter relay. Pin 85 or 86 (not sure which) should be grounded when in park. Stick a multimeter or a test light onto the pin and check if it is grounded when in park and neutral. If it is then you can rule out the inhibitor switch. If not then you have to get under the car and pull the loom off the inhibitor switch, and connect the blue/red (I think) wire to ground. Now see if the car will start. If it does, replace the inhibitor switch. |
