Gday everyone, i need a replacement cat for the car i have just bought, i believe its a cat-back exhaust where pacemaker headers are used, then the cat is short (no bends) and the exhaust continues from there..
I was wondering if anyone knows what i need and where i can get a cheap one from, secondhand preferably Thanks in advance Matt

You could go to the wreckers and buy a cat off a late series AU falcon with low km's on it. probably $50, then take it too an exhaust shop and they can cut the 2.25in pipe at either end and weld in 2.5in flanges.

Yeah definately, the 2.5 inch high flow cats are worth around $300 new

Not true... I just bought a 3 inch magnaflow cat off ebay for 130...
I looked up the stamped numbers and its definitely a genuine magnaflow.. huge thing, very well made and you can see faint light though the honeycomb when you hold it up.. I could have specified 2.5 inch for the same price, but my genie headers terminate at a 3 inch pipe.. I figured I'd sleeve 3 inches from the strags into my cat.. and sleeve the cat down to 2.5 to connect to the 2.5 cat back exhaust. can't wait to see how it goes when I'm done with that as I think my 17yo factory cat is clagged and restrictive. (not to mention the factory headers) rgds Frank |

if your engine is stock its probably not worth the money to use one of the more expensive high-flow cats. a good option might be to use one from a v8 falcon or commodore - people always get them taken off at exhaust shops but they flow well enough for an i6.

yup, that is true.. but from everything I read.. a cat is really only good for 100-150,000 before it starts breaking down, less if your car runs rich or burns oil etc...
I figured that my old EA had done 250,000 before I changed out the engine, so the cat was knackered.. I also reached that answer because even with a brand new 2.5 inch exhaust with straight though muffler, the exhaust flow seemed restricted.. I plan to do what I can go get the cat and extractors installed on the weekened, so will know soon enough. My engine is factory except for XR6 cam and airbox (and soon to be strags). rgds Frank |

Just pull the cat out, and use a jack pole to bash the core out. You will never have to replace it and its free. Not too good for emissions but there are very few emission testers around. This is by far the cheapest option if you dont mind a little hollow sound in the exhaust and dont mind bending the law a little.

I await your post when you get done for no cat, and have to suddenly come up with 10k to pay the fine.....
