I've noticed on alot of the EF and EL's I've looked at, the exhaust is rusted...Why does this occur?
Also I plan on replacing the exhaust of my EF fairmont, was going to go entire system (headers, cat and tip) but have been advised against it, at least for now anyways. So what should I get exhaust wise, to look and sound good? |

rusted... they're over 10 years old now and being quite a large car, they have a lot of condensation build up.
Most of these cars get driven around 10 K's in the morning to work, then sit, just enough to get the exhaust hot. day in and day out. 1 vote for Redback 2½" sports system WITH rear muffler (not resi) they're under $300

lukey > redback anyday.
extractors + 2.5" lukey with one ultraflow muffler. do it. |

reason they rust is because ppl drive them 2 minutes from home to the shops and s**t and dont warm them up enough to evaporate all the water/condensation that had built up, it then sits there and rusts the pipes.
Get an exhaust system dude, one of the most cost effective mods to a car. not a big fan of the buy and fit kits, ive got genie xtractors with press bent custom 2 1/2 pipe work, any exhaust dude can do it easily, have also cut the rear res out of the pipe and put in twin chrome tip. |

i like the sound of the redback system but i have had a problem with there mufflers cracking around the weld and rusting out early..(2 muflers in 2 years)...replaced under waranty....
i guess the only real way around it is to get a stainless steel exhaust.. i guarantee it will last 10 years + |

Hmmmm decisions, decisions... I wasn't planning on getting extractors just yet, but now, I'm unsure. So for a nice loud meaty exhaust sound I need to go the whole set up? extractors through to tip?

Catback will make all the noise, but extractors will open her up for more power.

yeah mate, a cat back system only will make a flat droney sound. But with extractors on, it will have something that resembles a note, and it will be a little louder. |

Lukey all the way! These vehciles are 10 to 14 years old now - if the original exhaust is sstill on it then well done to it for lasting this long! Be careful getting extractors - might have to change insurance companies for them... |

If your going to do the exhaust might as well do the whole job if your going to have it worked on. better than doing it twice when you realise later that you shoulda put the extractors on
The genies are good for the budget conscious, but BFYB the pacemaker 4480's are a good choice. You could pay a bit more for top end stuff like de-fillipo, but the increase in power is not worth the vast increase in $. You wont be dissapointed with the 4480's, 2.5 mandrel bent exhaust (do it right, get a mandrel bent system) and if you can afford it, a hooker aerochamber muffler and stainless steel catalytic converter. thats a pricey system though but its what Im looking at.

Be careful getting extractors - might have to change insurance companies for them... i had the orignal cat back and i had to change the tail section (where the pipe bends over the axle) because of rust, i had a hole, i had to change it for rw, that was nearly 3 years ago. Last year sometime the tail section again rusted up, but this time the tail pipe totally came off the cat back, the pipe rusted off the muffler like were the weld was. So now, last year, i decided to buy a redback cat back, one muffler and reso and it sounds great and looks the part being 2.5inch and mandrel bent. Reason for not changing the cat back straight away as it was an extra cost (considering 90bucks to change tail for rw) also had to change steering rack for rw and some other things, so cost added up. With insurance i rang up and aami told me you are allowed one mod, prob same with other companies like alianz and racv, but now im going with justcar as they allow all mods. Soon to get extractors when i have time....this week on rdo, pacy 4480's with s/s hi-flow cat. oh yeah...
