Hey im really thinking about changing my engine as the timing chain snapped.
How would i go by doing this? I got an el. So im thinking of getting another el engine. When getting a second hand engine, what should i look for? Also how would i take out the engine and put the second hand one in? If any one has done this before, what should i look out for? Cheers Adam[/b]

Ive done s**t loads of engine swaps.
Get a sub 200.000 kms engine. 1. Lift car 2. Remove Tailshaft 3. Unbolt Torque Converter 4. Remove Exhaust 5. DC Battery and then DC Starter Cables 6. DC All Fuel lines under car passangers side. 7. Lower Car 8. DC all Cooling Lines 9. DC Vacume Controlls by passengers side Firewall. 10. Remove Power Steering Pump 11. Unbolt A/C Pump and DC eletrics 12. DC All Eletrical Connectors to Altinator and block for eathes ECT. 13 Between Intake Runners 5 and 6 Disconnect big eletrical connector and tie Back. 14 Lift Car 15. Remove Engine Mount Bolts 16. Push Torque converter back 17. Drop Car and hookup to engine crain and lift engine clear of engine mounts while supporting gearbox with trolly jack then pull engine foward so its sepeates from Transmission. Perform a final check to make sure nothings connected to the body still. Then life out engine. Install is reverse. |

So about a 2 day job if i was doing it from home...

Change the coil pack to a distributor and you should be able to use it and should last you longer. Though you can always go with another EL engine like I am. I have an XR6 engine that is going in. Anyways, if you want to take out old engine and drop the other one straight in, then you got to look at a lot of things as well as checking the pressures and stuff to make sure interior components are busted. Exterior wise, check if there is any sign of leakages around the engine, both oil and coolant/water. Check the dip stick to see if the oil is still in good nick...not black, thick or has contamination in it...like coolant or water. Check the gasket areas and look for cracks or any form of deterioration. Ummm there are heaps of things to look out for and lots of things can go wrong. If you want to have less hassles then your best bet is to buy somewhere where they have a warranty if you want to drop it straight in. Fix the timing chain and get it running for the time being while you rebuild another motor to drop in? or do you need it done quick? phong =P~

I'm just tossing up which is cheaper and quicker to do. Fix timing chain and hope that the valves hasn't hit the piston.
OR Buy a low Km engine and drop it in. My current engine (AFAIK) has 540,000km.It had good compression before the chain snapped. And just changed the Head Gasket.

You can swap the engine in 4 hours in a workshop.
So a Day at home. I would suggest a Reco Engine. There better than new. |

A good Reco engines been fully rebuilt with all new bits.

Oh ok. That will be a expensive option for me.
I'm looking for the cheapest and quickest option. Might replace the timing chain and hope the valves havent bent. If they have,ill just take the head off again and get new valves. Thanks everyone for you help.

Recondition engine would be good...make sure you get warranty though and check what may void the warranty.

Engine swaps are only quick if you have done it plenty of times before....for a first timer, I suggest you give yourself more then 2 days...cause you will end up running back and forth to get bits and pieces and ask heaps of questions. Not to mention, the s**t tends to hit the fan during a first time encounter with anything. Best of luck shnoza...I still got to do my engine swap. Too friggen lazy

540000..change it!
You should be able to get a good running motor for 500-700. Look for a late el motor as they are the same as au and you dont have to f**k around changing s**t to make it work as you would if u bought a au.. |
