Hello Ford people.
I am new to the ford side of things, having had motorbikes and commodores most my life, but now i have switched camps and have an EF gli manual with an xr6 engine that i am fixing up. Now I only have a small budget due to just getting married but want to get this car going fairly quick. So far it is just the xr6 engine, have redline extractors waiting to go on (near new for $100). My current questions are, is there any way to remove the air con pump and still get a belt to work for the pwr steering/alt/water pump? I am aiming for better performance through less weight. And the rest of the air con stuff was already gone before i got the car. Next, I want to move the battery to the boot and remove, if possible, the radiator bottle thing. Don.t mind if this means i have to get a different radiator. Mostly wish to do this for custom cold air intake. Any help is greatly appreciated, and if anyone knows of any sneaky weight loss ideas for the EF's, i'm all ears |

You can get a pulley that just replaces the air con pump that was made for the povo pack utes

Only the XG and XH utes had the a/c delete, and they are few and far between. Keep looking for one, but for now, you will have to leave the a/c pump in place, or make your own bracket and pulley. Cheers BenJ

ok thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye out for a pulley.
The car will be my daily, want to solidly beat my brothers VS SS (it does about a 14.8) and i will have a $50 a week budget. Currently it has monroe gt gas shocks with king super lows, 2 1/2" exhaust minus cat and i have a set of BA? xr6 front twin piston calipers which i need discs for. Also have a set of 18's for when i get the car on the road. Chasing fairly good economy (if this is possible) as this will leave me more money for mods. |

Re the brakes, BA and AU11 onwards are not compatible with the std E series front suspension components.
The only viable option is to buy a big brake kit, but, they start from approx $1500 up. Not a budget solution by any means. The most cost effective brake upgrade is to buy some std replacement slotted or slotted/drilled rotors and some decent pads. If the car has no cat convertor, get one installed ASAP, as if you get pinged for it the fine is so large you could have bought an XR6T instead. As for economy, it really is hard to go for both grunt and economy at the same time. Extractors can provide an economy boost while allowing for increases in power, but it really comes down to the way you drive. Start by doing a general tune up. Spark Plugs, High Tension Leads, New Coil etc will all help. Cheers BenJ

The car isn't on the road yet, so the cat is not yet a problem, and 1 will definately be put on the car.
In regard to the brakes, I was told that a tab had to be ground off and bigger rotors purchased. Annoying if this is not the case. So i take it there is no easy radiator replacement that does away with the ford bottle thing? as i need a new radiator whatever happens as mine is stuffed? In regards to the 14 sec quarters, my VS V6 with tune, high ratio roller rockers, TB, extractors/exhaust, stock auto/stall and gearing did a 14.94@93mph and beat my bro's SS once i put the manual in and did 11L/100 around town (still had interior but lots of weight gone). Now I kept hearing from the ford boys how much better the falcons go than the commodores, hence getting this one, so i'm going to be dissapointed if, with similar weight gone, exhaust, intake and tune it isn't into the 14's. Either way, its at least a month away before i can afford roadworthy/reg |

unles someon wants an '88 gsx-r 750 for $3500 or turbo kit for e series falcon with intercooler for $700? (not putting it back on as i am not responsible enough, nor can i afford the tyre bill, to have it on the car)
Also, have not had a car with working air con for many years |

Definite no to the easy brake upgrade. Just not doable.
What diff ratio are you running? This will have quite an impact on possible time slips. XR falcons had a 3.45 LSD, but GLi may well have a 3.08 single spinner. You can check by looking for the sticker on the axle tube on the drivers side. Cheers BenJ

Annoying if this is not the case. if it was simple conversion we would all be running ba /bf/fg brake kits on our e series falcons, also if your header tank is stuffed, just replace it, its their or a reason, as the radiator is lower than the head on the engine you need the header tank above the head there to keep the water full inside the head otherwise if it gets lowerer on water it will steam up and heat up more, thats what the cooling specialist told me anyway,

Cheers for that, problem is, the radiator is stuffed not the header tank so i was wondering if i could delete the header tank when replacing the radiator, but looks like it will be staying. in regards to diff ratio, unfortunately i have the 3.08 gears with single spinner. Want 3.45 gears but this is merely on the wish list for the moment. Would rather have the car registered than better diff ratios for now. And lks like i'll have a set of reco'd calipers then if anyone is interested Last edited by venerablechicken on Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:55 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Cheers BenJ I took your advice and decided to save my money and make my own. Took the pump off and stripped all the internals and bolted it back up. almost looks standard, the pulley spins freely still and will not come off and i lost 3.35kgs. I took photos so can do a 'how to' if anyone is interested |
