Hi all, me again, I was just wondering how much effort it is to convert coil pack set up on an ef to a dizzy set up from an el?
What needs to be done, change of ecu I know, does the whole wiring loom need to be changed, eg engine, and loom going to ecu? Would it be easier to put a new block in my car out of an EL so it has hole for dizzy etc as im guessing dizzy dont fit in where crank sensor is? Also is it worth it, just I am looking to get a cam soon, I have a vernier gear waiting to go in and have been told the timming will be needed to be adjusted for decent performance, and my understanding is this cant be done with the ef coil pack set up? your timing will be advanced or retarded with your vernier gear. not the coilpack or dizzy.

So I do not need to worry about it, I have read alot the ef timming can not be advanced etc but with the vernier gear I should be able to run and tune the cam fine just like if it were a dizzy set up?

I have had no experience with coil packs /EF's however I had a EL with cam gears and used to adjust the dizzy often. Made huge difference.
Maybe I'm an idiot? Fal98con I'm not sure on the loom side but I have a feeling you can pull out the crank sensor and just put a dizzy in it. What the devil are you doing up at that time of night thinking about this for?

yes you will have to change the entire engine loom and ecu and alot of the dash loom

EL ECU will not plug into EF so the ECU plug will need to be changed over.
Most people want to change from dizzy to coil pack, I would stay with what you got. |

like xr-lane said, everyone usually wants to change to coil packs, so id stick with them since you got them already, wierd that they went back to dizzy in the el's and then from au on its coil pack, no leads to worry about upgrading

When you adjust "timing" you adjusting the point in cycle in which the spark is given off... Not The angle difference between the cam and crank shaft... Even on ED's your timing can't really be adjusted as its full electric the EEC makes it what it feels... You can however adjust the base timing which is set with the EEC in diagnostic mode (with the tester in it)... You're vernier gear is only there to get the cam shaft in phase with the crank shaft, not to time the motor... (Would like to see someone try to adjust the timing this way, timing is adjusted with the motor running, how do you set a vernier gear with it spinning? ) I imagine on an EF your base timing can be set the same way, by turning the crank angle sensor... Your EEC plugs are definitely different as Josh mentioned... ED,EL are 60 pin... And I think I saw it somewhere that EF are 104 pin EEC's? Although I could be mistaken for something else here So being unfamiliar with late E series, not sure what that means in terms of loom changes, but the EEC wiring is behind the dash, so that needs to change and the Engine loom needs to change to get the dizzy plug... If you pull out that crank angle sensor a dizzy will slide straight into there... No hassles at all... Can't help you with which is better... Obviously the best set up ever is coil on plug as that's the current trend, might be a bit hard to get onto your EF though... As mentioned the EL was a dizzy again so there must have been some fault in the coil pack set up to go back to dizzy... Or something more versatile with a dizzy? As mentioned, (EF is 3 coils?) a coil per two cylinders is better than 1 for 6cyls and you have no button and cap that burn out eventually, its all solid state... Anybody have power figures between EF and EL to see if they gained anything by going back to dizzy? Goodluck...

If you put a memcal thats got the adjusted timing and fuel/ air mixtures accordingly would that make a difference? Carbys I get but these all elecs I dont know. I have been told though adjusted or adjustable memcals give you the outputs you need when going for other than stock settings? If I am wrong guys please put me on the right memcal track

your memcals for the early falcons are more commonly known as a J3 chip... I think memcal is more a commodore thing?
A sponsor on here, Jason, from TI Performance sells and tunes these chips... You can buy what ever you want, a blank chip, a base tune chip, a custom tune chip, a dyno tuned chip, and/or the programming gear to do it from your own PC... I got a custom tune and Jason tells me that he can set it to what he thinks is pretty close and then if you do 1 dyno run and send the A/F ratios as a graph vs rpm he can get it pretty much spot on with the second tune... Unless of course your good enough to do it yourself... This probably is a better way, and less hassle than changing all the gear that you have to... Might be a more noticeable gain too... Cheers, Tim
