I only just relised a Charger wasa Valiant - not up to speed with my older cars. Anyways, mate bought a Valiant ute, and was looking to see what engines were around for it, and it reminded me of the this charger I read about, so I was showing him, and it seems this cars pretty amazing.
There from like 1972, Chrysler Valiant Charger R/T E49. got a Hemi 265ci 4340cc 6cyl ohv 12v and put out 302HP or 225kw, that's some pretty big power for a 6 banger when you compare it to the current XR6 with only like 186kw 30 years later! And does a 14.4second quater mile! From what it seems most of the car was sourced and made locally. They reckon it's comparable to an original XR6 when they were beating the V8's, or to a Typhoon/XR6T. Has anyone ever been in one? Any idea on how hard the engines are to come by? I'm guessing they'd be a rarity now! |

the E49's shared the quickest quarter mile time with the Phase 3 for just over 20 years
really, the only reason the chargers arent as famous is cos they never had a bathurst win yes, i have been in one and damn..... it had some oomph for a 6! the original 265 hemi's from the E49 chargers arent exactly hard to copy so they make the original power.... the biggest bit to them was the triple webbers

The Chrysler Hemi 6 pack as it was called, was considered one of the most powerful production cars in Austraila rivialing the XY GTHO Phase 3!! That is untill the F6 came to production pretty crazy stuff.

Good old days, when men were men and cars did not have to meet emission standards.

Oh yeah, before my venture into Ford I was a Chrysler man. I still have a CM (now my father's) and a Centura (Torana equ.), both 265's.
Advantage lies in the close-to hemisperical combustion chambers and the relative short stroke to bore diametre. Motors are still relatively easy to get and good power figures can be achieved running a 4-barrel on a redline intake. They don't like Holleys - Edelbrock seems the best choice. Check out Hemi-performance for some ideas - http://www.hemiperformance.com.au We lose the advantage on the way we achieve displacement, though the BA head goes a long way towards compensating for this. Also remember that the Charger was a substancially lighter car than our E-series (1350kg from memory)

those hemi slant engines haul some serious a***. The guy that lives next door has a charger with a T4 Garret turbo attatched. The internals of the hemi's are from a truck I think, so they can also take a lot of mods and punishment.
They are sick off their head!!!!!! |

They are sick off their head!!!!!! The slant-6 was actually a different engine (The American). The hemi-6 an Aussie act. But yes, as a turbo and with substancial chassis re-enforcing they really are something.
