i have a ef here that wont seem to charge a battery to the point where it will restart the car.
the story so far: the car wasn't going when we brought it had a dodgy bcm, replaced it and the car started and runs, later that day i go to start it but it only winds over one or so revolutions before the batt dies so i jump start it and run for 20 minutes thinking it will charge enough but it lasts one revolution before dieing again, i put another battery i have here that i know is good, car starts runs but same same. i have 12.3 static at battery, 14.2 at battery engine running no acc on, no alt light on dash while running, i have also changed starter and i put the battery in another ef i have here jump started it and after 20 minutes idling it has enough charge to start the car 5 times in a row seems like the battery sense circuit is shutting down shy of the mark of full charge, any idea's? |

if a battery is dead flat and only jump started 20 minutes isn't enough to charge it. especially if it's just idling

sorry should have added the battery initially started out charged after being on a charger for 9hrs and the car wasn't at idle either i stuck a piece of card between the idle screw holding it at about 2000rpm.

You need to reconfirm both batteries are good - put them on a charger for a few hours, fit them, turn headlights on for around 10-15mins. Disconnect the +ve lead and plug to the alternator before you do this - put some masking tape over the lead terminal, as it's live.
If a battery is as bad as mentioned, you'll have no/dim lights in minutes. If alls good, swap alternators and normally run the car for a day, and again do the battery check above. For the alternators, Do your voltage checks again at idle, then turn headlights on and compare. With headlights on, just raise the idle and see if the headlights change brightness. I'm guessing an alternator has a blown/shorted/diode/s, and might be possibly discharging the battery also. Have a listen to it at idle compared to the other one, probably has a whine. The other thing that might be a possibility is that there is an accessory that's drawing power when everything is switched off. good idea to check earths and measure for unusual high voltage and current draw.

You can sometimes get the same symptoms as a weak battery if any of the battery cable connections are dodgy. Double check the terminal connections on the battery - where the copper cable meets the lead terminal end often corrodes or comes loose. Obviously, the contact with the battery terminals must be clean and tight. Then follow both cables to the other end and check for a solid connection - normally just remove, wire brush, and re-tighten is enough. A bit of brake or parts cleaner wouldn't hurt either. Check that the connections to the alternator are good too.

after more testing and f**k about i coulndt fault the charging system anywhere, i was stumped untill i put the multimeter on the battery while attempting to crank over it dropped to 3v, its a stuff battery, kinda wierd that it will start the other car i have here thats the exact model engine trans ect, i guess some cars just need a top condition battery, o and the motor in the suspect car has done 290,000 compaired to the reco with under 100,000 that starts off the same battery.

another thing that i am not sure if its related but it has runs choppy around 1200rpm fine everywhere else, i have done a diagnostic check the system doesnt show any error codes K.O.E.O or E.R, any idea's ?

car with 300,000 ks may have a weak starter motor / soloniods so it requires a strong battery to start.
if this is so it will fail some time soon. even with a good battery. lol.
