What is better for an engine such as the 4 litre 6 cyl I have in the old EL Ford.
Recommedned is a 20W-50 oil, now I'm wondering if its better for the car to use a cheaper oil such as Valvoline and change it say every 6000km instead of what I'm currently using Castrol Magnatec and changing it every 10,000km? Suggestions? |

it would depend on how you treat it i would figure. I change mine every 5000km cause my car doesnt get used to much but when it does it get thrashed. Im using fuchs

it doesn't mater what oil you use you should always change it every 5000 at the very longest.
my dads EB went 280 000km on valvoline then did it second head gasket. so we rebuilt the engine figuring it would need a freshen up by then. we stripped it down and no wear on any thing. we left the old pistons on and put new standard size bearings in. personly i wouldn't use castrol oil at all. in order of preferance this is what i would use motul mobile 1 valvoline penrite. with any choise. oil changed at 5000km with a new filter every time |

How do 99.9% of cars cope with 10,000km or 15,000km oil changes then? My old RB30E in my previous R31 did 400,000km without even having more than the rocker cover off. That only ever copped 10,000km changes. Amazing since it didn't do 5,000km oil changes eh. Nah, actually quite common. |

Nah, actually quite common. most of them don't you just dont see it for a few years. i worked in a dealership for about a year. and in that time i had to rebuilt 3 engines that where burning oil. one 4G63 and 2 4G15 engines. none had more then 40 000km on them. once stirpped and inspected it was found the oil rings and been clogged with crap from over contaminated oil. the factory interval was 15000km. once rebuilt we told the owner to change the oil every 5000km one did not 2 of them did the one that didn't now has oil burning problems again. 10 000km and 15 000km intervals are there for only one reason to make the car loong good for fleet buyers. they only keep the cars for 2 or 20 000 to 30 000km so for them if they only have to service the car once or twice it is cheaper then one needing 3 or 4 srevices in the same amount of time. or talk to an oil specialist about it. they'll tell you oil is not designed to be in an engine for that long. it's up to you what you want to do but i wouldn't let get beyond 5000km. |

makes you think though, all the new falcons and commo's first oil change is at 15,000kms? .. after EVER rebuild on my motors, oil gets changed at 1000kms, (part of the service)
I don't know how they can let brand new motor's go for 15000kms without an oil change . But i change mine every 6000kms But i mean, it depends on where you live, your driving style . I mean, i've got a fair bit of dust out here at the moment, so i change oil atm around every 5000kms . |

mine gets done every five thousand and i get a tranny service done as well just to keep the bands running tight( i know...wrong section) but you gotta keep it to 5000. We got a 03 honda jazz and that gets done every 5000 as well. Its just better for the engine.

Mine gets done every 5000 or less, but since that wasn't your question:
I think that if you are going to change it more often by going to a cheaper oil then do so - I think the term "quality over quantity" does not apply this case. Most oils these days should be fine for an ol Falcon motor. So get those changes happening every 5000 |

One of our new turbo diesel mercedes vans at work had a 1st service interval of 15,000kms, then the next one not until 45,000kms

However if you have an old rattly engine, the best way to shut it up is to chuck in a thicker oil... So your right anyway Stick with the same oil you have always used, and do it every 5000km. New cars are given a long service interval because the tolerances are tighter these days, the metals are longer wearing and the oil filters remove even finer contaminents. You could even go the expense of fitting and oil bypass filter, which adds another much finer filtering filter to the equation, so you can put in an expensive oil (Mobil 1) and only change the normal Z9 filter every 5000. The oil will be clean as a whistle and assuming your engine doesnt burn oil you wont need to top it up, or change it for a rather long time (30k+ kms)

IMO use the best oil you can afford
10,000km oil changes are fine, although if the car is driven hard on a regular basis, or regularly sees extreme conditions (heat, cold, dust, towing, stop-start driving, etc) 5,000km is a good idea
