came across this idea when reading the instrustions for my jaycar RPM switch kit. if you have a stand alone shift light or a programable shift light seperate to the tacho, you can pull it apart, and disconnect the light, then run the power wire up to the BBM switch, then the other wire taped up and left. now using the dial to change the shift light RPM will now be the power line for the BBM to switch.
if my RPM switch dosnt work, ill be doing this. i have a tacho with shift light here but the computer board for the shift light is on the front of the tacho section so it may not work with this type. so to clarify it all. instead of the light in a shift light, the power runs to switch the BBM instead. works in theory. anyone else done something similar to this? |

just use the standard jaycar setup, it's been proven to work!!!!!effectively. Also JMM did tests and 3800rpm is the best rpm too switch the manifold. so yeah ford engineers were on the money...........

I understand and it makes perfect sense, would be cool cause you can control when your butterfly will open and see if you can get any improvement over the stock 3000 setting.

i did. but i found that the instructions were kinda dodgy and quite confusing. not to mention the missing part in it. i just thorght id post up my idea of a cheap way of doing it.
the jaycar kit cost me 45 bucks, then the 2 hours building, missing parts, parts not labeled or directions of resistors ect. i think it will be easier using a shift light setup, atleast then you can change it while driving |

yeah thats it. altho only the positive goes to the BBM, as the BBM switch has a constant and then the switched apparently. it dosnt make sence to me but ill have another look.
on second thorght what i just said then dosnt make sense does it... |

might have a constant positive power and switched negitive, that's how the interior lights work.
otherwise constant earth and switched power. |

well the RPM switch from jaycar is switched power, there is a red wire and a green wire on the BBM switch

yeah but when doing conversions into EA-ED as im doing and a few others are looking into, you dont have the factory 3000-3800 rpm switch so we need to buy a kit. the way i see it is if you use the shift light like above then it will be easier to modify then to buy a kit or adapt the EL ecu

the 3800rpm point is the bets point to switch it over been proven numerous times but different companies The 3800rpm change over point may be the optimum for a standard set up, as soon as you start fitting after market cams, extractors, exhaust and all the other variables every thing changes. I've done my own tests when trying to sort out a R1 RPD cam, at 3800/4000rpm the power would come on strong but when the auto changed up a gear the rev's would drop back to 3500/3600rpm out off the power surge that occured at 3800/4000rpm. So I cable tied the BBM in the long runner position, I did loose low down power but there was no sudden power surge at 3800/4000rpm and when the auto changed up a gear and dropped back to 3500/3600rpm the cam was still in the meat of the cams power. Every engine set up will vary so to will the change over point for the BBM. Keep going huggiebear if a reliable easily fitted solution can be worked out there will be alot of interest me being one of them.

RPD has also done testing and as wagon dad said the switch point is dependant on cams. we had an R4 that gained 20rwkw as the runners switched. several people saw it on the dyno. we ended up having the optinum switch point at around 2000rpm.
3800 would be best for a stock setup however. -mitch

in theory it would be alot easier, put it this way:
jaycar kit - 45 dollars - 2 hours to put togather - possibilty of missing parts or getting it wrong/damage to board (as i had) shift light - cheap second hand (i almost got one for 30) - pull open and disconnect led light then run new wires up to BBM switch and soldier + tape/shrink tube the wires to seal them. and your done. im actually going to track down a stand alone shift light kit and give this a try for scientific purposes |
