Just thought I'd post up a reminder or a warning to check you're steering rack bolts are tight.
Most of us would know that it is very comon for falcons to have the rack bolts come loose and cause noise or even come Out completely and drop the car. we've had quite a few ba's (usually utes) with loose racks clicking near full turn. E series with a clunk and low speed bumps, and today a gentleman brought in his au ute to diagnose A oil leak and As we were checkin it out I noticed his stud on the drivers side had worked it's way out, would have had maybe 3 turns of thread left in it. Just a heads up. |

The AU's that went through the recall should have a small bead of weld on the exposed thread of the studs to stop them from working out. This was done at the factory on post recall built car.
They all still need to be checked with a torque wrench periodically. |

My BA XR6 has developed a clicking/knocking usually while turning while travelling quite slow (under 30km).
Think this could be the same thing? |

There is a torque setting for the nuts, it cast into the sub member near the mounts.
Over tightening can cause more problems then it solves. |

Yeah, I did put a new rack in about 12 months ago and have a knock when I hit a bump on full lock. Gennerally when I pull into the driveway. I do have a sloppy uni on the intermediate shaft aswell so it could be that. I still cant believe how common this is

I've got anti-seize on mine and I've still never had them work loose...
Maybe thats all the mid-life b series steering click is, the bolts coming loose. Another fine example of Henry Fraud Engineering.

You'd think they would have used some sort of thread locker from the factory, or is the 15 cents per car too expensive?

I was going to say that all we do it take the nuts off, slide the rack back, clean the stud, rack, ect with a wire brush then grease the studs and torque them back up. I have done that with a few family aswell and never had a re-occurrence of the problem. But I didn't as the usual suspects would have a cry and claim for what ever reason that it wouldn't work or you shouldn't do it like that. |

You're all class Brad, no doubt xcabbi wrote: You'd think they would have used some sort of thread locker from the factory, or is the 15 cents per car too expensive? I guess when you consider how many cars they produce and multiply that by the dozens of cost cutting related bugbears and it would add up to a great deal.

Hey atleast ford arnt making commodores that do rear mains, fuel pumps and engine mounts under 70k |

So you don't even torque them to the correct tension or clean the area first? No wonder you have to keep doing it.

Because if so FYI they don't keep doing it, once I tighten them they are fine, they havy nyloc nuts on them and it's not like the threads dirty the just need a nip up. If you were mention to be anal about it and Tempe the bus and clean the thread and replace the nut and add thread lock, they would say to do that in the service guid, instead if saying check rack by tension. How much do you charge to remove the nut and clean the thread, we know ou like to make sure customers pay up and you're pockets full. I chuck a spanner on it and fix the problem for free. |
